Dear Jack. The number line shows a subtraction (moving leftward toward the 0-origin) of 3 100’s and then of 6 1’s. The scale is poor but the printed labels are clear. That’s 306. The problem says 316. Lines really help if you depart from using just positive numbers.

For those who have an aptitude for math, put them in AP classes. Most people only need a good understanding of the basics of adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing. Teach them how to balance a checkbook and calculate their expenses.

Basic money management skills are lacking as much as plain old math skills, if not worse. Common core serves to only make it much worse...on purpose.
The Common Core calls for greater focus in mathematics. Rather than racing to cover many topics in a mile-wide, inch-deep curriculum, the standards ask math teachers to significantly narrow and deepen the way time and energy are spent in the classroom. This means focusing deeply on the major work of each grade
After years of this kids are being sent to high school who cannot do simple multiplication (like 7 x 9) without resorting to a calculator.
Jack and Jill went up the hill each with a buck and a quarter... Today, 25 yo can't make change for a dollar without a phone calculator. Many can't read cursive writing. Many have never read "1984", "Animal Farm", no Shakespeare, No classics at all, They don't know what the Constitution even says, They don't know about the Civil War, WWI&2, They don't even know who we fought in WWII. You can literally ask many of them who we fought in the Viet Nam war and they don't know. Now days, they can't even look in their underwear and tell you definitively that they are boys or girls. But they will tell you we have less than 10 years to live on this dying planet. Anything coming from someone under 30 should be treated as if a monkey said it.
My dog would eat every last fig.
The fond praise "Yankee Ingenuity" would be stricken from the memory of subsequent generations and the very diversity of thought and coming at problems from different approaches, the great strength of our nation, would go the way of our Constitutional rights.

If somehow the development of computers had been restricted to engineers trained using Common Core, we would just be coming out with the Commodore 64 in time for 2020.
