The Legacy of Low-Bar Impeachment
American Greatness ^ | 12-8-2019 | Victor Davis Hanson

Posted on 12/09/2019 1:34:45 PM PST by Sir Napsalot

From now on, impeachment can be used against any first-term president with a record of success. It will be used solely as a political strategy by the opposition party that controls the House to weaken a president’s reelection chances. That’s the Democratic Party’s legacy and Democrats will live to rue it. (emphasis mine)

Since the embarrassing impeachment and failed conviction of President Andrew Johnson in 1868, Americans more or less had avoided that ultimate constitutional method of removing a chief executive from power. The Johnson impeachment had been so steeped in personal hatred, political rivalry, and post-war agendas that the failure by one vote in the Senate to remove the impeached Johnson more or less discredited the process for a century.

ONLY IF American voters hold them (Dem Party) accountable. As things stand right now, it is kind of iffy.

It is Victor Davis Hanson, you know you want to read it all.

We will now be like a Parliamentary country where the vote “no confidence” and force a new election. Sad

Nope. The Founding Fathers were right. The Constitution will prevail, and God is in charge.

I really like VDH.

He is absolutely brilliant.

But, he keeps forgetting that he’s a genius and 99% of Americans aren’t.

The Constitution was written EXPRESSLY to prevent the Banana Republic stunt that the Rats are attempting right now.

The English Kings had spent centuries routinely arresting and executing each other. As did the rest of Europe.

People should also remember that the original Constitution did not make Senators un-recallable Gods, which they are now. To vote to convict a President that your state voted for would mean an instant recall from the State legislature, which is how they were appointed up until 1913.

What is happening now is the death of the Constitutional system and shows that the government is dominated by foreigners who have no roots in our country with no understanding of the precedents that led to the Constitution.

And that will mean in the end a hot “civil” war that will make the first one look tame.

Democrats do seem to do actually illegal things as President so once impeachment is the normal course of politics the Democrats are more likely to be hurt now after Trump has shown the way on how to deal with this stuff.

When we have to round up all of them and hang them by the necks until they're dead, dead, dead, we'll have to be sure to point that out to them.

One thing I have noticied...no cross examination.

Both Democrats and Reupublicans do not challenge the other’s counsel.

They mostly ask questions of their own witness to support their own narrative.

Why has no one asked, or provided evidence, whether Obama or any other President managed foreign policy in the same manner as Trump has?

“did Trump do “X””

“yes”

“did obama ever do “x”

“was what obama do... impeachable?”

No they won’t. Republicans would NEVER do what these Democrats are doing to Trump!

Maybe they should, but they will not!

I don’t think senators were ever recallable even under the pre-1913 system.

However it was a superior system, its main flaw was keeping the position filled when there was a vacancy.

VDH forgot the corollary...

this was meant by the Democrats to debauch impeachment so it cannot be used with any reasonable expectation of removal against a future Democrat president

Rule I. Impeachment is not credible when it involves criminalizing a president for thinking about doing what other presidents have routinely done. A president should be specifically impeached on the basis of evidence that shows he committed “high crimes and misdemeanors” or “treason” or “bribery.”

The above is simple and logical... most people would find it easy to understand.
