In a conversation with fellow actor Brad Pitt for a lengthy chat for Interview magazine, Anthony Hopkins explained why he seldom -- actually: never -- talks about politics... and why he's not a big fan of other actors talking about politics either. In short: "Actors are pretty stupid."
"People ask me questions about present situations in life, and I say, I dont know, Im just an actor,'" Hopkins told Pitt. " I dont have any opinions. Actors are pretty stupid. My opinion is not worth anything. Theres no controversy for me, so dont engage me in it, because Im not going to participate."
Hopkins was interviewed by Pitt because of the release of his new Netflix movie, The Two Popes, in which he plays the part of Pope Benedict XVI. Although Pitt apparently tried to get some controversial political (or religious) answers out of him, Hopkins refused to play that game.
It is extremely refreshing to see an actor take this position. Sadly, the new generation of Hollywood stars has a different opinion. Take Mark Ruffalo, the millionaire actor who recently endorsed Bernie Sanders. This multi-millionaire (who's reportedly worth $30 million) wrote on Twitter that "its time for an economic revolution. Capitalism today is failing us, killing us, and robbing from our childrens future."

Smart actors keep their mouths shut. He’a proven what type he is. Fools open their mouths and confirm it to the world.
No. He’s probably more intelligent than most considering his cautiousness.
In reality he’s an actor who wants to keep acting. Not being a hardcore nutwad bleating out libtard talking points keeps audiences from boycotting him and his films.
Pretty sure I heard Alan Arkin say just about the same thing as Hopkins quite a few years back. Always loved him as an actor but my admiration for him greatly increased when I heard that.
The Silence of the Actors........ if only : )
I rarely watch movies. One day I decided I would watch a movie on TV. I came across "the Fastest Indian in The World." It was a biography of an Aussie who won a race in the US against all odds. Anthony Hopkins portrayed the Aussie. He gave a gripping performance. I couldn't stop watching. Yes, he is an actor, a good one.
Given some of his recent performances, I'm guessing that the gruel would be quite thin.
A smart liberal POS, who could separate his acting from his politics, so people on either side of the spectrum could enjoy his performances, even in stupid TV shows, such as Kevin Serbo’s Hercules where he played Zeus. He played a very earthy, even funny Zeus. Nothing political. Nothing political in La Strada, This Man is Innocent, Requiem for a Heavyweight, etc. Just a man and his role. Besides, he managed to nail a young chick at the age of 80-something, and sire a child. I should be so able at that age.
Compare that with Kevin Kostner. Prince of Thieves? Water World? Feh! Everything had to be political. And political leftardian to the nth degree. Same thing with Leonardo de Crapio. The only thing I liked about Titanic was watching him freeze to death at the end. Pretty boy leftard, and it showed. In fairness, John Wayne was sometimes political.
Anthony Quinn was old school just a great actor. Same thing with Hopkins, who is following the example of better men than the modern crop can produce.
I loved all his movies, and I saw them all, but he was a liberal POS that hated conservatives.
I don’t care. If Barbara Streisand would just shut up and sing, I wouldn’t care about her politics, either. When they keep shoving it in your face, like Jane Fonda or Leonardo deCrapio, it gets on my nerves, not just because I disagree, but because all I want from them is some f@#$ing entertainment, not sermons about how virtuous they are. At least John Wayne managed to be an unique character, not just a billboard sign with a pretty face like Kostner.
..and some Chianti?
Alice Cooper has a degree in physics.
Great actor, smart man!
