We question the intention of the local cops in citing him for unlawful discharge of a firearm, and especially for confiscating (impounding... whatever...) his (really nice, custom) Kimber handgun.
It's gonna cost him a stack of bills to clean up the legal fallout and to get his Kimber back, unless he's friends with the Mayor or something like that...
Oh, and by the way it's probably a good bet that it will have the residue of about another 50 or 100 rounds put thru it if he does get it back. But nothing against the cops in Gatlinburg, mind you, I've had no experience with them.
He should sue the PD immediately for false arrest and 100 other things a good TN attorney can come up with......
When I tried to go to the original source (Gun Watch) I got a screen saying I had to do a Google Sign In to go to the original blogger. That never happened before. Got any idea what that’s about?
Its not that nice a handgun if its not reliable with a full magazine.
One more round could potentially have done just enough damage to drop the bear. Better yet, if hed had a modern .45ACP carry pistol of similar size, he could have had double or more the ammunition.
I carry at a minimum a Glock 20 with Buffalo Bores. Normally have a 44 or 454. Reason we have grizzlies and lions on our cameras frequently. Not to mention cow moose with calves. All pose potential harm.
I agree. Nice factual narrative.
I didn’t realize that Tennessee was that screwed up when it comes to self defense. That being said, that’s why I carry a Glock 23. 14 rounds to neutralize any threat, and if the police seize it, well, it’s just a Glock. I can get another one for a quarter of what that Kimber cost.
Kimber....Motel 6....Kimber.... Motel 6....
Putting their money where it counts.
Did those video recording the bear call the police? Did they see the shooter and alert him to the danger?
It's sad that we live in a culture where those behind the camera can record an event but not lift a finger to remediate. This is particularly true with national media who video record the 'story' but do not intervene to help the victim(s).
The guy who taught my wife’s CCW class was a retired police Captain. One thing he stressed very strongly in the course was that the police are not your friend.
The point that Captain Obvious and I are attempting to make is about his firearm being taken away from him by the local cops for no good reason.
They, the cops, see it, they want to keep it so that they can conveniently keep it in some way, or sell it to their BIL, or at least take it out to the range for a test drive. They don't ask any questions about it's function or reliability, they just see a customized 1911 and that's it.
I am not disputing that, just adding in the fact that he had a known unreliable firearm. Any firearm that isn’t reliable with a full magazine is *broken* and should not be carried. Fortunately this guy didn’t pay the ultimate price for that, but perhaps if he’d had more ammo available the bear wouldn’t have gotten away and the grounds for the charges would be a lot more shaky.
You’re right.
I want my very best firearm on me if I have to pull the trigger. My best one is easier to draw and less likely to snag. My best one is more reliable (and I suspect the concern about reliability with a full magazine is residual from old wives tales, not this gun in particular). My best one reloads just a little more quickly. If using my best handgun means I lose $1500 more than with my Glock 17, that's money well spent - so long as I'm alive to deal with corrupt police stealing from the victim.
Peeking, not peaking - hey, you don’t know - that could have been that dog’s highpoint...
I thought of that but couldn't bear the thought that it was all downhill from here for the little guy.

Yeah man. I would rather bitch slap the bear than chance an unreliable gun.
A hand fun for bear? the 10mm absolutely.
