When I got our turkey at Kroger last week, they had fresh Butterball birds in one case for $1.69 a pound. There were two birds left the size of pterodactyls. I looked at the tag on it, not checking the size, but it was $53 and change! Now, 53 ÷ 1.69 = 31.36 pounds of farm-raised gobbler. I opted for a 13 pound Honeysuckle White and a two pound, spiral-cut brown sugar ham instead. I'm not running a soup line at the local mission here.

But given the number of locusts about to swarm us later today, you'd think I was.

That’s a huge bird. I went to Kroger looking for a store brand bird for 37 cents/lb. They didn’t have any (local store has a big problem with no advertised sale problems available), so I went to Meijer. Spent 33 cents/lb. 12 lb for $4.

That was Sunday night. Have had it in the fridge since, but it still feels rock hard. Good thing I have a backup plan.

I would love to have found a two pound ham. All I saw were whole or half hams. Prices were good, but no way could I use that much. Ham doesn’t freeze well, not even in recipes.
