According to the script, I was a non-binary LGBT activist demanding that the clinic washrooms be gender neutral. As my instructions read, the “enlightened applicant” would find a solution to my complaint—whether by removing the Men/Women designations or putting tape over the signs. They would also apologize, and work with me to make the office more “inclusive.” Other scripted demands were LGBT Ally signs in the office, posters depicting “people of a gender-fluid appearance,” and staff sensitivity training on LGBT issues.

Internally, I recoiled at my task. As a Canadian who hasn’t even yet managed to find a GP who’ll take me as a regular patient, I was offended by even this fictionalized take on a clinic bending itself into knots for someone prosecuting ideological demands instead of soliciting medical services. These students were effectively being judged on how quickly and slavishly they would prostrate themselves to identity politics. At the same time, though, I owed it to the students to acquit myself professionally. It wasn’t their fault the script had been written by an ideologue. And I was, after all, being paid.

So I aggressively hectored each student about my urgent pronoun needs during their allotted eight-minute simulation. Needless to say, they folded faster than lawn chairs. None of them wanted the equivalent of “ideologically non-compliant” stamped on their med-school applications.

The first young man was so anxious I thought he was going to break down in tears. At one point, he literally blurted out “yes—yes whatever you want.” I felt like I was taking hostages. “Maybe…” One girl nervously gulped, “…we can retrain the staff? Or—or maybe just a whole overhaul?” She was offering to fire the office for me.

Time wasted on transgender crap could have been spent learning to treat real problems. In the future, the emergency room doctor may not know how to deal with your chest pain, but he or she will ask what your preferred pronoun is.

I guess I am just not around the right people, but I have yet to meet anyone who didn’t use pronouns that match his or her chomosomes, not even two guys who dressed, looked, and acted like women. They used their male names and masculine pronouns. I know these people exist, but I don’t know that they exist to the extent that it is worth anyone’s time catering to them.

Not a single student presented any kind of challenge.

The younger fruit of post-Christian Western Society. Sad. Raised up in the way they should NOT go. Guess who they vote for?
