Mayor Pete Buttigieg wants to raise taxes on the more wealthy Social Security earnings, as part of a plan to save it from bankruptcy, according to a plan released Monday. Buttigieg announced individuals earning above $250,000 (Families earning over $500,000) would face higher Social Security taxes if he is elected president.

It sounds innocuous enough but nobody old enough to receive SS believes it will stop there. The bar for taxation of SS benefits as income is already fairly low, and people on a fixed income find this sort of talk very threatening because there’s no real recourse and WalMart can only hire so many greeters. Anyone who believes the government will only take a little bite should recall the glib reassurances that the income tax would never reach 10%. Those lies got a Constitutional amendment passed and we’ve never gotten rid of the thing since.

If social security funds (created by taxes on workers) had invested the earnings properly, we’d be getting a lot more return on our bucks.
It was one of the few programs that was NOT welfare.
Nothing new there. It's going on right now. I'm forced to pay income tax on part of my SS retirement benefit because the gov't. feels my non-SS income is too high.

Here's another unpopular position. I've thought means testing is the least that could be done to try to save SS for those who desperately need it. Dangerous move, true, but SS will be bancrupt unless something drastic happens.

There already is as form of means testing in effect.
The U.S. has Social Security agreements with 26 countries, and legal immigrants who haven’t earned enough work credits in the U.S. might still qualify for benefits if they’ve earned enough credits from another country.
In short Buttigig is taking STEP 1 - Turning Social Security into a Welfare Program for the democrat base... paid for by the American middle class. Eff the little bastard...

Can you imagine the interest it would be earning if the funds had not been spent? It probably would have been paying for itself (benefits paid out) just on the interest earned decades ago.

Translation, higher taxes on everyone getting SS. SS should not be taxed, was it Clinton or Obama who started that?
Wait. Your taxing money that has already been taxed once and given to the US Treasury for future distribution back to you, and that should be taxed more?
No one paid in, you paid for someone already getting it.
