[Sheriff] Randy... Seal won a third term as sheriff of Washington Parish in Louisiana last week, but after serving his first two terms as a Democrat, Seal is now a Republican. The sheriff switched his party affiliation almost immediately after his victory was made official, and says gun control is one reason he made the decision to leave the Democrats behind.

Seal said he waited until after his Election Day win to change his affiliation, and is now the Republican sheriff of Washington Parish.

“I don’t like what’s going on in Washington,” Seal said. “Don’t care about abortion and Democrats support that. They are against the Second Amendment and I support the Second Amendment, and I am for closed borders. I think we ought to have rules. If we don’t have rules, we have chaos.” Democrats definitely believe in rules when it comes to the Second Amendment. In fact they believe in so many rules that the average American simply couldn’t exercise their right to keep and bear arms. I guess those aren’t the rules that Sheriff Seal is talking about. Seems like he’s talking about rules like “elected officials have a duty to protect, defend, and uphold the Constitution” and things like that....

He has a heritage, and so do people in Louisiana—including Louisiana Democrats.

Back in ‘88, when I met my first Cajuns (I grew up in rural Oregon), Dems outnumbered Pubs in the state by about 9-1.

The present governor of Louisiana is probably to the right of at least a third of the Pub’s in Congress, and arguably 2-3rds. He, not Manchin, is by far the most conservative Dem office holder who is not merely local in the country.

The first Louisiana governor to support abortion via veto left the Dems to become a “RINO,” skipping Reagan and running right to the Bushes. Although I believe he had Bush Srs. active support, he finished third in the jungle primary, behind two pro-life candidates. A former Dem governor who had had to take time off as governor to spend some time in prison, and a former Grand Wizard of the KKK who was running as a Pub. This gave rise to one of the best bumper stickers ever: “Vote for the Crook. It’s important.”

Likely there is still some residual memory of Lincoln down there, and an appreciation of FDR in a positive way, which Reagan himself couldn’t overcome on the local level. These things take time. Ditto for Kentucky, West Virginia and Arkansas.

I’m from Mississippi and this parish is right next to the MS state line. We have a weird dynamic down here, until the 80’s virtually everyone voted democrat, republicans were virtually unheard of due to memories of reconstruction. When Reagan came along we started gradually voting republican for president and congress/senate but the local offices were almost all held by democrats. In many MS counties you still have to run as a democrat if you hope to have any chance of being elected to local office. Blacks are almost all democrat, but many whites will vote democrat for local elections and republican for national ones.

I suspect the same weird dynamic exists in Louisiana. For the most part any democrat from Louisiana or Mississippi is going to be a hundred times more conservative than a Mitt Romney or Susan Collins. They’re gradually coming around because most of them are tired of explaining why they’re in the same party as Nancy Pelosi or the idiot squad.
