He must have scored very low on reading comprehension. Of course, that clause was written by long-dead white males in some sort of strange language they used back then. It IS rather hard to understand, isn't it?
The problem is the Constitution doesn’t guarantee that churches/synagogues/whatever religious organization are guaranteed to not have to pay *taxes*.
This is the problem with being a 501c(3) organization. You end up getting addicted, financially, to the tax benefits because the government can then change the rules for what qualifies as “tax exempt” at any time.
Best not to claim such status, even if you’re a charity/non-profit of some kind. It pays off in the long run, no pun intended, because then you can and do enjoy all the protections of the Constitution regarding your freedom of expression.
Sadly though many of the larger churches depend on the tax exempt status to operate now. So, it’s a problem, if people like Beto get elected.
