It’s Travis Bickle and Rupert Pupkin with make-up.That seems to be the conscious intent all along. Making it a gritty character film like from the Seventies. It even opens with that old style Warner logo. The approach worked quite well (though it does have that ba$t@rd De Niro, filling in for Jerry Lewis from King Of Comedy).
