FWIW:
Smithfield Foods/Parent organization
WH Group
Smithfield, owned by Chinese conglomerate WH Group (0288.HK), was not immediately available for comment. The company is the world’s largest pork processor and hog producer with $15 billion annual revenues, according to its website.Nov 16, 2018
I visited a hog farm in Eastern N. C. around 1982. It was remarkably modern and clean looking. Then the stink hit me. It was awful.
Maybe they will eventually solve that too.
¿Habla el idioma chino?
That makes sense. The Chinese eat much more pork than any other country.
Smithfield started in Smithfield, VA. The Chinese bought the oldest and best ham, bacon, and all pork producer and trashed the quality of bacon to the everything. I buy Wrights bacon now. I hate anything not made in the USA, except Mercedes, Rolex etc.

They make those wonderful 24oz. packages of bacon, none of that 16 oz. plastic envelope stuff.
Its 973,000-square-foot meat-processing plant in Tar Heel, North Carolina, was said in 2000 to be the world’s largest, processing 32,000 pigs a day.
China purchased 146,000 acres of farmland in the USA when they purchased Smithfield.
Their quality does seem to have gone down, Smithfield used to be a premium brand. Maybe a year ago I bought a Smithfield ham. It was a bit tough which you don’t expect from a premium brand.
I actually knew they were now Chinese owned but thought they would maintain quality. Apparently not.
Smithfield Hams goes back to the mid 1930’s.

Well, if Trump goes down, I guess it will be the Mandarin speaking Hispanics who will be our new over lords.
That aside, I do believe apprentice programs are a good thing.
Getting a Smithfield ham was a Christmas tradition for our household from before I was born in 1960 until my dad passed in 1990.
They would soak it in brine in the bathtub for a couple of days prior to my mom baking it.
I think apprenticeship is the way to go to get some of those who currently have low to no skills, into the workforce and productive. Productive people tend to evolve into adopting a more conservative outlook, and they tend to have a more positive attitude about life in general.
“That aside, I do believe apprentice programs are a good thing.”
Absolutely. I wish I’d stuck with the electrician apprentice program that I worked in right out of high school.
Oh, and...bring back high school shop classes.
That is the way my family and I and most people prepared and cooked those hams. The Chinese totally F’d- up those hams and the thick cut bacon that was on par with Wrights hickory Smoked. The best thing about Wright’s is one can buy 3 and 4 lb. packages. Sam’s had the 4 lb. for under $20.
I have found a few Arkansas and other country hams on par with the old Smithfield. It is hard to find them though.
You are right. The Chinese trashed the brand.
