President Trump and his views on immigration, Muslims and foreign affairs isnt popular with Indian Americans. Thats not likely to change much, so why did Trump travel to Houston over the weekend to appear with the recently reelected Indian prime minister before thousands of them?
More than 80 percent of Indian Americans voted for Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election, according to an analysis by the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund. And according to the Asian American Voter Survey, Trumps approval rating was 28 percent with Indian Americans registered to vote in 2018.
But that isnt keeping the president from appealing to win the support of some members of the community. Trump will probably remain largely unpopular with black Americans the group that voted against him at higher rates than any other ethnic or racial group. But part of his reelection strategy appears to focus on or at least give the appearance of nipping away at how strongly other people of color back Democrats. Those familiar with Indian American political engagement, however, say Trumps efforts are not likely to be deeply effective with the community.

Ah, but people were wearing MAGA hats professor. I saw them when I watched the video.
Not sure why Indians are so liberal, same for asians. They all get discriminated by libs and muslims hate their fraking guts, calling them nonstop polytheistic heathens.
Not directly comparable between 2016 (Presidential) and 2018 (separate House and Senate polls), but support for the GOP seems to have increased markedly among Indian-Americans:

1. Improving bilateral trade between the U.S. and India, the worlds largest democracy.
2. Developing political, economic and strategic ties to help counter China and Iran
3. Possibly setting the stage to negotiate over H1-B visas and the tech sector in Congress.
4. Improving the opinion held of him and Republicans a little among 4 million Indian-American voters.
Please add any I missed.
India is an ally with the United States and will back us against China’s strategic objective for world domination.
You nailed it!
Italian Americans were overwhelmingly Democrat at the peak of their emigration to the US in the 1920's. It wasn't until the 60's that they voted 50-50. Asians vote somewhat to the left of big city whites because most are recent immigrants and big city residents. And more than half showed up in the last 20 years, if the Indian-American population is any guide:
Historical population | ||
---|---|---|
Year | Pop. | ±% |
1910 | 2,545 | — |
1920 | 2,507 | −1.5% |
1930 | 3,130 | +24.9% |
1940 | 2,405 | −23.2% |
1980 | 361,531 | +14932.5% |
1990 | 815,447 | +125.6% |
2000 | 1,678,765 | +105.9% |
2010 | 2,843,391 | +69.4% |
2017 | 4,402,362 | +54.8% |
The one drop rule seems to work in reverse for white-non-black mixes, so I expect that Asian-white progeny will pretty much vote like their white neighbors, depending on where they live (i.e. liberal in liberal neighborhoods and conservative in conservative neighborhoods).

Excellent....
The Greater Asian Co-Prosperity Sphere I believe the Japanese called it.
Yes and India is close with Russia who also dislikes China
Look to see a strategic USA-India-Russia alignment to contain China.
No. Russia has allied themselves with China now...there is a ton of cooperation between those two countries in trying to limit the US. Russia’s big thing at the moment, along with China is to replace the dollar as the global currency of exchange.
just anecdotal evidence: most of my engineering class (of ‘88) are now in the US. They visit almost every summer as parents age. Almost all lean Democrat. But next year almost all intend to vote for Trump while staying Democrat. They actually like his anti-illegals policy, anti-Terrorist policy and most of all his anti-Pakistan and anti-China policies. If the Dems go any further left they will vote against them because socialism is what caused them to leave India in the first place.
Calling India our ally a bit of stretch.
I have found Indians to be extremely status-conscious
And for some reason I don’t understand, Democrats are considered “chic.” Republicans are looked down upon as yokels.
Yet at Trump’s Houston rally, I saw folks, young and older, of Indian descent jumping, cheering and wearing MAGA hats and Trump t-shirts!
He might as well go after their vote since they’ll be ignored by the dems.
If he only gets 5 or 10% more of their votes it could swing some crucial states. It didn’t cost him anything to go there and give a speech.
Powerful leverage over islamic terrorist supporting (and potential nuclear weapon provider) Pakistan.
Access to a market big enough to absorb surging US export capability for oil and gas.
A huge pool of high skill tech workers, who could rapidly displace Chinese citizens in the US (all of whom are now legally required to spy for their Government, as of 2017).
A huge pool of low wage factory workers, who could replace Chinese suppliers of low wage products entirely.
This is how you lose states like Michigan and Penn.
