Amazon Just Made a Truly Stunning Announcement. (It's Incredibly Good News for President Trump)
Inc. Magazine ^ | September 10, 2019 | Bill Murphy Jr.

Amazon made an unexpected announcement Monday that's truly good news all around.

But the top beneficiary might just be President Donald J. Trump.

The online-slash-everything giant revealed Monday that it currently has 30,000 unfilled jobs in the United States, everything including (as the company said in a statement) things like:

entry-level roles at Amazon's fulfillment centers

software development engineer positions

computer vision scientists, and literally thousands of other positions

That's a lot of open jobs. We'll address how Amazon wants to fill them (and how to apply should you or a loved one be interested), below.

It's worth stepping back first to explore what the idea of adding 30,000 new Amazon employees to the labor rolls would mean.

They were afraid of lobotomizing their retail stores.

So they let Amazon do it, instead.

I’ve had a few recruiters reach out to me on Amazon positions.

They have typically been lower paying for equivalent roles.

I’ve also heard very bad stories about how they treat their employees.

It is likely that these 2 factors are major contributors as to why they have a gap...provided the gap is not expansionary.

I often get their in house recruiters contacting me about software positions. They typically require a physical presence in the seattle WA area. They may need to embrace ‘telework.’

We have an increased labor force participation rate and an unemployment rate so low that we have more open jobs than applicants. Including these 30,000.

The main beneficiaries have been minorities. Black and Hispanic unemployment is at record lows, and the unemployment rate for women is the lowest in 50 years.

...Move their wishbook online, promise 2-3 day delivery, and they could have been Amazon...

Even better, they could have started with pick-up in stores for in-stock merchandise, and overnight deliver to stores. Faster and no porch pirates.

I was out riding this weekend because of excellent weather conditions. Decided to hit Campbellsville (KY) for lunch. I was surprised to pass by an Amazon fulfillment center I did not know was there.

And within the next 12 months, the demonrats are going to throw the entire kitchen sink in an attempt to sabotage and crater the economy. They will go all out no matter who it hurts in order to keep bad orange man from getting a court pick. My dream situation is a crushing victory followed by 3 court picks

Amazon is sucking up to Trump.

Why?

A couple months ago, Trump stopped that $10 billion cloud contract that MS was also competing to win. Amazon had the inside tract until Trump stopped it.

Trump should insist that Amazon hire American citizens only, and that they won’t be soon replaced by commercial robots or AI. Amzzon will balk at that suggestion.

Those 30,000 jobs might be temporary, until the cloud contract is decided.

So how close are we to “Own your soul to the company store?:”

Soon no stores will be left. Buy through Amazon, obey their rules or go without.

I’m curious, what does a job in “Computer Vision” entail?

No thanks. You can have those jobs and work for the nation’s lead hardcore exhibitionist. And yes, I live in Amazon’s home state and there is a customer support center in my conservative town. The loony lefties we do have all seem to work there.

There is nothing that I need to purchase through Amazon. I'll buy from the local stores (Walmart included), or I'll buy from some other online store.

The only thing that my home has that comes from Amazon, is the firestick, but only because it was a gift. If more people were like me, Amazon would have gone out of business more than 10 years ago.

Your JC Penny’s comment made me think of the fact that Sears and JC Penny SHOULD have been Amazon.

Sears long ago became a real estate holding company that happened to own department stores. Their eventual doom was written before Amazon. Granted, they blew a big opportunity.

Way back in college economics I recall the professor talking about the U.S. Steel industry. They were told by hired consultants to modernize in order to compete with China. But the steel guys said they could make more money with their investments in real estate, banks or whatever it was - so they didn’t modernize.

I think some of the American car manufacturers (GM primarily?) fell into the same trap with their car loans and financing operations. “Why should we spend all that money on improving our cars when we make a much higher percentage on loans.”

“AWS [Amazon Web Services?] proudly supports the unique needs of the U.S. Intelligence Community through improved security, increased mission impact, and cost savings.”

I know of one rural community that is getting a dozen new, VERY large buildings. Fitted solely for Amazon computer servers. “Computer Vision” perhaps?

Yes, General Motors. General Electric too. It all began when the MBA's took over.

You should ask “Mr. K” in post #5 for his thoughts.

Think of all the pick and place robots in Amazon. How do they “see” the products they are picking and placing. Think of the hundreds of thousands of mobile robots autonomously roaming Amazon’s enormous warehouses. How do they navigate, arrive at the correct destinations, and avoid collisions. Think about all the checks that take place to. Are sure the right product is shipped to you. What reads all those labels, shipping manifests, and work orders? Think about loading all their aircraft and trucks. How do the correct containers get loaded onto the right truck or plane? Are all those documents read by humans? Or by machines?

I’m sure there are one thousand more examples.
