Job seekers have the upper hand in todays labor market so much so that employers are beginning to be more flexible in order to bring on new talent.
In the last year, nearly 40% of companies have eased their job requirements in order to fill vacant roles, according to a new survey from Adecco USA. The recruiting and staffing firm for temporary workers asked over 500 hiring managers about what efforts theyre using to widen their candidate pools. About half of respondents represented employers in manufacturing, industrial, call center or transportation fields, while the remaining respondents came from all other industries.
What requirements are employers willing to budge on most? According to the survey, hiring managers are more likely to give leeway when it comes to previous related experience. Instead, 78% of companies will consider applicants with transferable skills that could lend to train-ability in the new job, rather than them having to fit the description exactly.

Where was this philosophy 5 years ago when, as a 50+ worker, I was displaced by some snot-nosed kid who "worked" for a lot less money? I remember using this argument in the very few interviews I got, to no avail.
Apu will be employed before an American.
Im still seeing openings from what I consider to be responsible companies that are really 3 jobs in 1 hire.
Maybe were just reverting to realistic job descriptions that a candidate can actually fill.
Try being somewhere that leans heavily on government and healthcare for IT, with many large private sector employers heading for the exits. It’s nice if you have a clearance and Security+, not so much for anyone else.
Wouldn’t mind finding somewhere that’s willing to overlook (a current) lack of certs in exchange for what experience that I have now(mixed platform enterprise along with small-business IT). Bonus points if they don’t mind practical Linux/UNIX experience.
We are so desperate for warehouse workers we will hire anyone who can fog up a mirror. Every warehouse, truck dock, etc. in our area has at least 100 job openings today. No one will be able to find workers for the Christmas season.
Much of “experience requirements” we’re there to filter out Americans so they could justify hiring an H1B with a fake resume.
I've pretty much given up looking for seasonal work during tax season. My resume shows 20+ years of tax prep experience, up to and including converting the tax program for a publicly traded company that had operations in over 45 states, and 14 subsidiaries.
Both responses that I received out of the 30+ resumes I sent out were identical: "we don't think you're a good fit for our firm."
Screw 'em.
Wait, what's the topic again?
The DNC debates?
You wouldn't have "right off the street." Apprenticeship programs often take years to copmplete.
I was contacted by a staffing company that told me Id have to submit to a background check + drug test before theyd do anything.
I told them to get lost & wished them will with the drug testing, since every other 20-something I deal with is stoned on recreational weed.
I dont know how some of these kids function on a daily basis.
It’s called “Training”
Apprenticeships are an old idea whose time has come again.
When I was a hiring manager in Silicon Valley tech firms, I found that 98% of the resumes received were pure junk. We’d get Indian and Chinese resumes that matched maybe 2% of our requirements. It was a huge chore for HR to weed through the crap to find the genuine nuggets. We never met 100% of our hiring requirements (nobody does), we were generally happy to hit 65% to 75% of the requirements and train to the rest. It’s been that way forever. We wouldn’t hire anybody who didn’t have a thirst for knowledge and a desire to improve.
Typing, even longer.
Offer a high enough wage, they will come...
That’s hilarious.
Although ...
It might be Pooh to you but it’s a plumbers bread and butter.
Dont worry the job will go to a unqualified person from a protected class or to a person of the same ethnicity as the mgr. Or a pierced tatted neck beard who does know how to code but has the analytical skill of a
post turtle and would be an embarrassment in front of
clients. The ACLU or the state labor board would not begin to take up
your legitimate grievance
A latter day reply, youre not a cultural fit
“Sam, if you think Over 50 is tough, just wait until you hit Over 60.”
I’m 58 and semi retired. Wanted to sell my business I started in 1985 (had a buyer) and work some random jobs.
Went to 4-5 job fairs. Zero zip nada. I have 2 degrees and ton of certifications and better shape than the overweight people in their 20’s. Couple of speeding tickets over the years and never any drug use or alchohol. Temp jobs at $10-11 hr was about it.
Yes, going to keep my business and run it out over the next 5-7 years.
At age 58 as invisible to a employer as a ugly guy to a beautiful woman.
As a consultant since 1968, I have been on many job interviews and handled the paperwork for many searches for employees and consultants. Since 1968 standard practice is to list job requirements that are never really job requirements. They are listed as requirements precisely so the employer can reject an applicant without revealing the real reason.
The real reason is uusually the person is ugly to look at, has bad breath, has an irritating personality, etc. Occasionally the reason is race, religion, sex, etc.
