EXTREME ADULT CONTENT ALERT. ADULT EYES ONLY.
This piece has been a long time coming. I was alerted to this a few years ago, researched it, saw it was true, and then heard enough other anecdotes from across North America to become convinced (with encouragement) that a warning needs to go out, especially to those in Trad Catholic parishes. The best way to protect oneself from sex predators is INFORMATION.
Weve probably all been to a Renaissance Fair or at least heard of people who go off on weekends and do Medieval/Renaissance role playing/reenactment stuff. People make their own costumes, many learn fencing and archery, and many also learn genuine artisanal crafts such as blacksmithing. Hey that all sounds pretty cool, right? In this day and age, one could hardly argue with a person who instead of sitting in front of a TV watching mindless sports, or playing video games, goes out and actually DOES SOMETHING and interacts with other people right? Absolutely.
Enter the SCA, which stands for The Society for Creative Anachronism. SCA is by far the largest organization of Medieval role playing, which today has picked up the term LARPing, with LARP standing for Live Action Role Playing. The SCA was founded in ARSH 1966 in Berkeley, California (red flag number one) and today has tens of thousands of members in chapters all over the world. Members join and adopt a persona or character, and then live in this alternative world as their character at SCA camps and gatherings.
Heres the problem. While SCA does in fact involve Medieval reenactment, it is also at its core a sex cult revolving around group sex, orgies, swinging, wife swapping, child sex, and all manner of truly sickening behavior.

There is a guy at work who’s 30ish year old daughter is a LARPer. He claims it’s innocent fun. My first reaction was shock that a 30 year old was still playing dress up. I had never heard about the sex cult aspect until this article. That makes more sense why it’s apparently popular with certain people. It still makes my skin crawl.
The ugly and maladjusted have needs, too.
It may be true that the group engages in orgies and such, but does Barnhardt disclose her source of information? A disgruntled former member? Eyewitness testimony? Or just hearsay?
Hand tied goat intestine condoms...how cool is that?
I dont see an identified source however Ive heard it in my own life from more than one person so when I saw her blog post, I thought Id leave it here. Kinda spread the word.
Pinging you because I know you and family have been to these things.
I don’t see it happening at the event level but maybe there’s a core group who participate in debauchery after the gates close?
Baah....
It’s not “a sex cult.”
It also is not an organization which enforces sexual mores.
The SCA operates more like a big hotel complex which hosts conventions, and which doesn’t care if some of the guests get naked in a conference room as long as the cops aren’t called.
Beating on each other is a young mans game, and I quit being involved when I got too old for bruises to heal.
When I was involved, I went to one event held in Redding California at which some sexual shenanigans were reportedly participated in by some other marines from 29 Palms, and then I didn’t hear of any such activity in events I attended whilst stationed at leJeune.
The organization doesn’t particularly stamp down on that stuff but then it doesn’t sponsor it either.
Playing dress up and dabbling in candle making and homemade mead will also attract men and women desirous of a ribald affair in medieval trappings.
What the organization does actually sponsor is preservation of medieval metalworking techniques and historically accurate weapons techniques.
So, bottom line: it’s not there for illicit encounters, but its not going to play chaparone either. Don’t send your kids, but also don’t alledge that the behavior of the crowd which attends is sponsored by the organization.

Does it care that pedophilia is likely happening according to some? It’s just like the Catholic church IF these things are happening- the ‘leaders’ or ‘organizers’ or ‘sponsors’ will eventually be held responsible for turning a blind eye, and allowing it to happen- but again- that’s only IF this is going on and people are aware of it and are still sponsoring it-
I was told once if you were into the BDSM lifestyle and were looking for a woman predisposed to such stuff, Ren fairs were the place to go. I guess all the dungeony stuff, stocks etc. was the draw.
Well perhaps it should enforce sexual mores. If the organization has gained this kind of reputation then maybe it should care whats going on after the sun goes down, especially if illegal activity such as sex with minors is occurring.
“Playing dress up and dabbling in candle making and homemade mead will also attract men and women desirous of a ribald affair in medieval trappings.”
Fair Maiden: ‘Sir Harold, is that your broadsword are you just happy to see me?’
People dressing up and having fun? That is not allowed!
This from the Catholic Church, LITERALLY a medieval organization with a sex problem.
I’m more likely to believe your account - some sex is going on in private, but that it is not the core purpose of the group - than Barnhardt’s. Although I sympathize with her battles with the corruption in the Catholic Church, I think she goes overboard sometimes.
About forty years ago, I attended one of their “faires” at a public park. I went as a spectator, not a participant, and I recall there was a plethora of “buxom wenches.” So I would not be surprised if there was some hanky-panky going on, but that does not make it a “sex cult,” to use Barnhardt’s term.
Ann to totally wrong on this. I have participated in the SCA for decades and have never been asked to violate my christian beliefs. Are there those in the SCA who wold different creeds, of course.
There are devout Christians in the SCA, does that make the SCA a sexually repressive club? No. Just like any other organization, it is a mix. Some good folks, some strange folks, some not so good and the occasional bad actor.
My parents met through the SCA and I grew up going to events. Not ONCE in the past thirty years have I EVER encountered or heard of anything remotely sexually inappropriate.
like i said IF the reports are true- many catholics went to church all their lives and never realized there was pedophilia going on- (Until it got exposed in the media)
Looks like I may just have to join up and find a damsel in distress to save
