Historically, women have needed to be convinced to enter politics. But since the 2016 presidential election, thousands of women announced their plans to run for public office. And we want them to win. So we're giving them a monthly example of a woman who has run. The point: You can too.
Sybrina Fulton is widely known as one of the Mothers of the Movement, a group of mothers who have lost a child to gun violence or police brutality. In 2012, she lost her son Trayvon Martin, who was an unarmed Black teenager fatally shot by George Zimmerman. His death sparked national outrage that helped motivate grassroots movements like #BlackLivesMatter, and since then, Fulton has become an advocate for gun reform and racial equality. I felt so alone after Trayvon passed, Fulton told ELLE.com last year. Even though people had been shot and killed before, you do feel like you are the only one going through that pain.
Turning her pain into action, she founded a retreat to help other mothers heal after losing a child to violence and founded the Trayvon Martin Foundation. In 2016, she campaigned with presidential candidate Hillary Clinton as a national surrogate.
Now, Fulton plans to take another step in community activism, this time running for Miami-Dade County commissioner, representing a district primarily occupied by African Americans, Latinx, and immigrant communities. I had no clue that I would ever be running for office, but sometimes when you get fed up with things youre like, OK, I just got to do it myself, she shared, laughing. Here, she dives into why she decided to run and her plan to win.

Wonder what that pays?
She didnt lose her son - stupid twit got into a fight and got shot.
He wasnt lynched, he want attacked, he instigated and that somehow makes his mom worthy of office.
Frankly I think that makes her UNWORTHY of office because he Edisons teach her son basic common sense.
Because the little jackass was out thuggin' and acting a fool.
I had a Mother of a Movement this morning.
Yes, clearly she failed as mother. Only a Democrat finds that to be qualification for public office.
Didn’t she already run for office before, and lose?
I guess she’s giving it another try.
Or maybe I’m thinking of Michael Brown’s mother, the one with ties to The Bloods street gang. Her hair was dyed to literally look blood red.
She was uninvolved in his upbringing.
She needs To go sit down and study her navel.
Must be a lot of competition though.
Sybrina was a mother in name only. Biological.
From Wiki....
After being divorced, Martin’s father married Alicia Stanley, who had two daughters from a previous marriage. They met when Martin was about three years old. Stanley and Martin’s father were together for about 14 years. Stanley told CNN’s Anderson Cooper that before she and Tracy Martin separated, Trayvon was with her 90% of the time, and that she went to all his football games and took care of him when he was sick. She said that Trayvon was a kind and loving person, not a ‘thug’ as the media portrayed him.[12][19][20][Note 1]
Her thugger son played the knockout game and assaulted a community watch volunteer he thought was gay and got killed by the guy in self defense as he was pounding his head on the pavement, as all came out at the trial. Ruined the guy’s life.
Trayvon was killed while trying to kill someone, plain and simple.
You’re a little late Sabrina. You should’ve started the day he was born.
She used Trayvon’s death as way to raise money.
That was her primary involvement after he was three years old.
If a White woman raised a thug who was expelled from school for stealing jewelry from classmates’ lockers and assaulting other students, and who then tried to murder a man by smashing his skull into a sidewalk, only to be killed by that man in self defense — would ELLE run a glowing, admiring profile of her?
Maybe if she was transgender, a lesbian or an illegal alien.
Um, didn't she move out, leaving Trayvon with his father? Minor detail.
There are two groups of people you should never believe. Because each time you believe them you come out on the short end of the stick. The two groups are the media and the politicians. Which two groups are telling you that you have nothing to fear from Red Flag Laws or any gun control laws for that matter? p>
Now it's Trayvon's mom, whose failed parenting is her ticket to state office. Oh, and Valerie Plame is also running for something, because some leftist Republican "outed" her. I don't know how your cover can be blown when you park your car in the CIA parking lot everyday, but she's a victim too or something.
Ya gotta love the AC on the iPhone... Edison
