In Minnesota it is also “Up North”. And once up north, it became “the cities”.
“Yeah we’re going up north for the week.”
“So how long you up for?”
“Oh - we head back [down] to the cities next Sunday.”
The use of the word “down” was sometimes used, but redundant.
