French President Emmanuel Macron announced the creation of a French space force to reinforce his nation's air space capabilities.
"To give substance to this doctrine and ensure the development and reinforcement of our space capabilities, a space command will be created next September in the air force," Macron said Saturday in a speech in front of the military. The space unit will be called the "Space and Air Force."

The French are no pansies when it comes to extracting oil and minerals in their sphere of influence in Africa or the Pacific.

The surprise in this announcement is that it is of a French space force instead of a European one. Jokes aside, French aerospace technology and manufacturing are first-rate, and, based on the successful Arianne family of boosters and their launch facility in French Guiana, France has a solid third place in space launch capabilities. Macron likely intends to use his space force program to preserve the independence of the French space program from Europe’s grip.
