NM state senator shocked by DWI arrest: ‘Are you serious?’
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A New Mexico state senator expressed surprise when he learned he was being arrested on a drunken driving charge, slurring his speech as he lay in an emergency room and saying to an officer, “Are you serious? Jesus Christ.”
The comments from Sen. Richard Martinez, D-Espanola, appeared in police lapel video released Monday. Police said he crashed his Mercedes SUV on Friday night into the back of a vehicle that had two people inside stopped at a red light in Espanola, north of Santa Fe.

NM state Sen. Richard Martinez is questioned by Espanola police following a crash on 6/28/19. Martinez was later charged with aggravated DWI and reckless driving.
When I was a wild and crazy teenager I got slammed on more than a few car hoos/trunks and smacked with a nightstick in the legs a few times as well.
It was a lot better than going to jail and having a criminal record and beleive me we learned from it...and those same cops would help us and back us up anytime we needed help and were in the right and not doing dangerous shit...stupid shot got a lecture and escort home...dangerous shit got a physical correction
Espanola IS the dangerous area, and anywhere 2 steps out of the main city is the boonies. I never go there after dark. Daytime I stick to the main streets. But Cops there are pretty good. They are doing a very difficult job.
It seems that way. Illegals kill more people by drunk driving than by any other method.

I was much better behaved as a lad, apparently. I do recall a time where I deserved to get knocked around a little.
There’s no discretion allowed in most jobs anymore, Law Enforcement included. People aren’t allowed to think, just follow the established procedures and check off the corect block and fill out the paperwork in triplicate. I recall a bunch of us got caught underage drinking at a park. The cops made everybody pour out their beer and somebody got their bong confiscated I think. But we didn’t go to jail. I drove for quite a while without a motorcycle license, well any license for that matter. The unwritten rule was they had to catch me, and they couldn’t, because I knew every trail and escape route and back alley in the city. I suppose they could have just waited till I went home, but that just wasn’t done. That was comsidered dirty pool, I guess.
hmm, I love northern New Mexico. But Espanola, hmmmm. I wanted to look at a house there, but I had a realtor send me some pix first, they couldn't get inside because of the police tape and haz-mat warnings, it was a beautiful adobe meth lab...

Rio Arriba (A-REEEEEE-BAAAAA!) county has a bad drug problem. I think it’s the worst county in the state for that sort of thing, and it’s pretty bad all over NM.
