Where and when did this “yacht rock” name originate? It’s like it popped up everywhere this week. What in the world?
Rumor has it that at any given time, at least 40 per cent of the Sirius audience has this channel dialed in. By far, the most popular channel on the satellite network. (There's a Yacht Rock station on Spotify as well)
It's life changing. Every song is pretty much perfect. Not a lot of women singers however and I'm petitioning to get this song by Maria Muldaur added to the playlist.
I'm also thinking "Chuck E's In Love" by Rickie Lee Jones would be a nice addition.
There was a series of comedy videos in the early 2000s called Yacht Rock. It was kind of like a parody of rap wars, but with soft rock. For instance, in the first episode, two artists are about to fight one another (I don’t remember who) until Christopher Cross starts playing Sailing. The mellow smoothness brings everyone together and stops the fight. It’s all silly and intentionally poorly acted and with no regard to actual history, but it garnered a cult following and inspired Sirius XM to do an annual summer channel a few years ago. It is now year-round on channel 311, but mist radios don’t go that high. For the rest, you have to wait for summer.
Been around a while. Was an early web series. There were 12 episodes. This one is the best, along with the first four. The rest weren’t so good. Some of the actors are now in the show “Drunk History”

SiriusXM started a seasonal channel of that name a year or two ago. It sucks. Put Road Trip Radio in its place ffs.
I'm guessing it comes from a Sirius satellite radio station that advertises itself as "Yacht Rock".
