So there are not many women in the world of Yacht Rock. Sure, you hear plenty of women doing backing vocals on Yacht Rock tracks but very rarely, if ever, do they take the lead vocal.
Not sure why that is. I mean women can be just as smooth and breezy as any man singing a Yacht Rock song.
Case in point is Midnight At The Oasis - a smash hit from back in 1973 - by a woman named Maria Muldaur.
I don't care what people say but this tune is a cornerstone of the Yacht Rock canon. I mean, the cactus is her friend and she's sending the camels off to bed. Good! It's about time those camels went to bed so that the two of us can slip off to a sand dune and kick up a little dust. I will be her sheik and she can be my belly dancer. Or something like that.
Just make it smooth.
Yeah— boat rock— for a cigarette boat, maybe. But this for a 130 footer (not sailing) motor yacht? Don’t get it, cause people who listen to this type of playing/jazz are club/small venue theater people... musical people not background types, or button downs.
Y’all might like these two: Kircher (Commander Cody) and Redd Volkaert. Worth a listen- Volkaert was with Merle Haggard for several years. Both killer players: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NCjr6Q1ErZw
Wasn’t this song a reply to Ray Steven’s “Ahab the Arab”?
When I’m tuned into Sirius Satellite Radio and not listening to the Patriot or going slumming on the “progressive” stations to catch the Left’s current party line, I usually listen to Fifties on Five, Sixties on Six or Willie’s Road House. I’ll have to surf over to the Yacht Rock station, since I like some of those tunes from the late 20th century.
Thanks. I’ve been listening to Spotify a lot lately. I like the Daily Mix they make for me. Found a female jazz singer named Jane Monheit who is wonderful. There’s a Jane Monheit station which is quite nice.
I’ll check out the Yacht Rock on Spotify.
“isn’t it terrible that the once proud Middle Eastern community in this country, mostly Christian at the time, have become one that should be feared and not trusted.... “
It is indeed a terrible thing.
That’s a funny genesis to “Yacht Rock.” Thanks for the history less. I cannot believe I have never heard of it until the past month or so.
I just now surfed over to Youtube and listened to "Sailing," which I had never heard before.
Speaking of Michael McDonald, this was a hillarious spoof of him from SCTV....

Plus it came out when I was a teenager with raging hormones.
Wow, I just found the Redd Volkaert station on Spotify thanks to your post. Started off with “Telewacker - Live - The TwangBangers.” Love it! Great stuff.

Wasnt she the vocalist with The Jim Queskin Jug Band?
Not sure I recall the ‘dancing against the music’ :-)
Maybe means just swaying to the song??? LOL...I have no idea!
Yes...great to amuse ourselves whilst the DCC proves themselves to be ever the clowns.
I’m not watching their debate, I’m having too much fun catching the ‘replays’ by posters here, and on FNC
Looks like most of the ‘crowd’, at their debate, are presstitutes!
Been around a while. Was an early web series. There were 12 episodes. This one is the best, along with the first four. The rest weren’t so good. Some of the actors are now in the show “Drunk History”

SiriusXM started a seasonal channel of that name a year or two ago. It sucks. Put Road Trip Radio in its place ffs.
Good one.
I just played “Sleepwalk” cover by Amos Garrett. It’s a great cover and he really has super technique.
I'm guessing it comes from a Sirius satellite radio station that advertises itself as "Yacht Rock".
Michael was a neighbor of ours for a number of years. We were at a birthday party for him and they played this clip. Everyone loved it.... even Mike.
I have decided that Yacht Rock is really Michael McDonald radio. If he is not singing lead he is doing backgrounds on three quarters of the songs played.
Really like the Little River Band, and The Amazing Rhythm Aces... “Third Rate Romance” (Low Rent Rendezvous)”
oh, and of course no GA boy could ignore Little Feat (the original) “Dixie Chicken”.
And... The Atlanta Rhythm Section-— everything of the original band who were The Classics IV (backing Dennis Yost).
Well, she didn’t age all that well but still does folk music I guess. Think I actually aged more gracefully than some of the chicks I had a crush on.
