I’m not sure it’s that straightforward/simple.
But I do believe that the article is an attempt to harm Trump and his reputation, perhaps to numerous audiences.

That is my thinking as well. The left will discount the substance of the charges — old news, everyone knew MLK and JFK cheated etc — and focus on the angle you mentioned.
