Immigrant Families Forgoing Food, Housing and Medical Care n Fear of Trump's Visa Plan, Study Finds

Immigrants in the United States and their families are forgoing essential welfare benefits like public housing, food stamps and Medicare over fear of persecution, a new study has found.

One in seven immigrants avoided public benefit programs in 2018 out of concern they would risk their future green card status, the Urban Institute found in a report out Wednesday morning.

Last week, President Donald Trump proposed changing the nation’s legal immigration system to limit green cards given to migrants who rely on welfare benefits or who are not financially independent. Instead, the president said he would prioritize well-off citizen-seekers with job offers or job creation ideas.

The president’s claims that migrants abuse the welfare system have been amplified since the 2016 election. In October of 2018, the Trump administration proposed a rule change that would make it easier to remove migrants who rely on public benefits like food stamps from the country. The rule is currently being finalized. These policy changes and the president’s rhetoric have had a chilling effect on migrant’s use of aid, The Urban Institute found.

If they are foregoing these things as this article says then they are clearly not better off here than in their home countries. This does not pass the smell test.

One in seven needs to go to Six or better, in seven.

Actually, they just need to go, and come in the lawful way.

“...fear of persecution...”

or does someone mean prosecution?

Persecution is ‘religious’. Can’t have any religion; separation of Good and Evil, and all that.

When it is seven in seven “forgoing benefits”, we’ll be making some progress.

Assuming that they have worked and have surplus income that allows them to remit $150 billion, then it is only fair to note that they have through their labor created far more in wealth that has enhanced the US economy. Either you believe Milton Friedman or you don’t.

Last week, President Donald Trump proposed changing the nation’s legal immigration system to limit green cards given to migrants who rely on welfare benefits or who are not financially independent.

This is not a new idea. In the halcyon days of easy immigration (Ellis Island), admittance was routinely denied to those who could not support themselves and their families. We have an ample supply of native born in that category without importing more.

Plus, the cost of living is a LOT lower in Guatemala, etc. than in California.

This is how they remit so much money home. They work under the table. Because they have kids born here the kids qualify for all benefits. Food stamps, cash welfare, WIC, medical. When your kids are all paid for it’s a helluva lot easier. Everyone knows that. The American taxpayer is paying for their kids so they can send a portion of their work income back to the home country.
