Yes, that seems to be EXACTLY what happened. Except he left out Putin’s reliance on the profound stupidity of a large chunk of the American population. A population which has been dumbed down and lied to for decades.
Let me put it another way. Suppose the Mafia in New York City wanted a particular candidate running for mayor to win because they knew that person would be soft on them, and even help them out in many ways, while that person’s opponent was just the opposite. Someone who would be sure to crack down on the Mob, put them out of business, if elected. They could then PLANT (fake) “evidence” that that opponent had worked with them in the past and would continue doing so in the future if elected in an elaborate effort to smear him.
