While many have began criticizing the dead former Confederate leader, in 1975 the Senate, which included freshman Democratic Delaware Sen. Joe Biden, unanimously approved the reinstatement of General Robert E. Lee’s citizenship to the U.S.

Lee died in 1870 without citizenship.

Independent Virginia Sen. Harry F. Byrd spearheaded the push for reinstating Lee’s citizenship posthumously, and it passed through both chambers after the House, voting 407 to 10 in favor of the reinstatement on July 23, 1975.

All the information is technically correct. It is the word choice and structure that can easily create a false impression to a casual reader who is not parsing every word. That's what I picked up on. A casual reader could easily think that the vote to restore Lee's citizenship was recent, when it was 40 years ago.

True, but he almost always voted with Republicans on any issue of importance.

Year after year, in Human Events’ roster of U.S. Senate roll-call votes, I noticed how conservative Harry Byrd was. He was light-years better than “Sheets” Robert Byrd.

Funny. Both, in their time served a party and a government that sought to deny blacks basic humanity , civil rights and freedom. One did through aggressive war and another through punitive legislation.

“I believe, “Independent Virginia Sen. Harry F. Byrd” was a lifelong Democrat!”

Correct!
Harry Sr was a democrat. His son, Harry Jr was the independent.

Harry Byrd was a businessman who thought government should be run like any business. Trumpian before Trump.
He opposed FDR’s New Deal and JFK on economic grounds.
He was a democrat because a Republican couldn’t get elected in Virginia at the time.

It had nothing and could not have anything to do with Charlottesville or Trump over 40 years later.

Keep telling yourself that pal. Gropin' Joe paying to post here?

What difference does that make? Sen Biden voted in favor it. He is a hypocrite.

How could a vote in 1975 to restore Lee's citizenship have any substantive connection to the protests over a statue of Lee 40 years later?

The vote was unanimous in the Senate and 407-10 in the House. How does voting with the majority of both houses of congress make Biden a hypocrite?

40 years ago Lee was a great American worthy of praise and respect and now he is trashed. What's changed? Nothing except Biden and his ilk are gaming the PC system.

I don't know how to better express or show the hypocrisy on display.
