In the early 80s, I had a clock-coffee maker. One afternoon, I noticed some sparking in the dark kitchen and smelled burning plastic. When I checked to see what was going on, the wiring in the clock had shorted and the ‘innerds’ actually caught fire. I unplugged and got it to the sink. Had I not been home or had been asleep, I would have had a major fire.

In the early 2000s I walked by a large 17-inch tube-type computer monitor. The computer and monitor were turned off. I noticed some smoke, heard some sizzling and smelled burning plastic. The ‘innerds’ in the monitor had started burning. Luckily, I was able to unplug and douse. Again, had I not been home or had been asleep, I would have had a major fire.

They can happen. There are numerous stories of appliances and TVs starting fires.
