On Monday, the world reacted in horror as the nearly 900-year old Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris was nearly completely destroyed by fire.
Horrific flames quickly engulfed the entire core structure, and after 2 hours, the iconic spire collapsed, along with most of the roof and its 210 tons of lead.
That's what we know.
Here's what we don't: What caused it?
Well the media seems to have focused on one reason, and one reason only: the cathedral was "under construction" -- a reported $7 million project lasting years, and scheduled to complete just this year.
Therefore the most logical reason, absent obvious foul play, is a "construction accident."
FoxNews and most other nets treated it as such:
Given the scope of the renovations, it is quite likely a "welding spark ignited paint thinner" or any other cause widely speculated in media reports, that can typically occur on a busy construction site.
But there's just one big problem with that.
Two hours after the spire collapsed, French-Greek journalist Sotiri Dimpinoudis reported that there were no construction workers onsite at the time of the fire:

Fire could have spread that fast there because of hundreds of years old dry wood. Cities had horrible conflagrations centuries before any buildings had wiring. Also, once the steeple fell, the fire was able to breathe and get much more oxygen in.

The events that happened at that time did not seem connected back then. They seemed like isolated events with no connection.
Cahn did his homework well for that book and showed just how connected the stuff was. It was staggering to see the connection of the WTC and the very inception and birth of our country.

To put out a fire you have to get the extinguishing agent to the base of the flames. You can't do this from the outside while the roof is still intact. When you see a bunch of hose streams directed at the outside of a burning building they are reducing the amount of flying burning embers and radiant heat. For the most part saving a structure requires an interior attack.
My last assignment was on a ladder truck, we are the ones who get on top of the roof to vent the fire to help make it possible for fire fighters on the interior of the building to get to the base of the flames. Sometimes we also did “trench cuts” to help isolate the burning section of a building from the intact section in an attempt to save part of the building. This all has to be carefully coordinated. This is an incomplete explanation.
One time we had a house fire that was going to be a total loss. It was in range of our fire boat which had a very large capacity pump and water cannon. That was the only time I ever saw a house fire with a mostly intact roof put out from the outside. Of course the entire structure was demolished by the huge stream of water and the debris was washed down the steep bank to the beach, but there was not much left that was still burning. The burning of Notre Dame Cathedral happened on the same day as the Boston Marathon bombing on April 15, 2013, when two homemade pressure cooker bombs detonated by cell phone signals. It would be easy to set off a fire ignition device using a cell phone.
Closest station’s less than half a mile. They’re the third biggest fire department in the world. From the photos, it appears the fire was established when spotted. If so, it was a defensive operation from the beginning. The roof was going to go very quickly, and at that point, protecting exposures was about all they could do. The place was a goner before the first engine got out the front door.
