~30% of your income taken straight away via income and social security tax, etc. factor in sales tax, gas tax, excise tax (for some of us), sin tax, travel tax, inheritance tax, property tax, etc etc, many Americans are paying an effective tax rate of well over 50%.

And yet the government is trillions in debt and their solution to everything is more taxes. Ain’t it grand.
