There’s no shortage of anti-vaxxer’s at FR. I was wondering what their opinion is of taking a vaccine for an old-folks malady?
My sister got the Shingrix shot, but when I asked for it, they said that you need to be 60 years old before it will be covered. I guess it might vary from state to state.
I got my meds today at the VA today for what appears to be shingles on my upper lip. The Doctor asked if I had the shingles vaccine. No. Now I missed work today, church tonight and am concerned about sharing what my family doesn’t need. Maybe I will get the vaccine when I get through these meds.
Then, patiently waited until the new vaccine became available about a month back. And, I got it right away.
Very mild reaction, injection site swelling, rash, a teeny headache.
All quite manageable compared to the heck that is shingles.
Since the vaccine is given in two doses separated by 2-6 months, I'm curious as to how much additional effectiveness is provided by the second shot? (In other words, how much protection is afforded by just the first shot?)
I'll still get the second one, just wondering what additional protection it provides.

I’ve had shingles. I will not get the shot.
I have also never a flu shot and will not get one.

I disagree. Many parents are concerned about cognitive effects, yes, but most parents I know are opposed to the vaccines because they are obtained from the use of aborted fetal cells as culture. So their opposition is based on morality.
Also, I would note there are ZERO studies to demonstrate the long term safety of injecting humans with DNA remnants from other humans. There are some questions starting to arise about the astronomical increase in cancers of young adults & whether that can be linked to genetic contaminants found in vaccines.
Four years ago, my primary care physician suggested that we wait until Shingrix was available. Shingrix is the new two shot vaccine for shingles. The old vaccine was much less than 50% effective while Shingrix is supposed to be 90% effective.
My wife and I waited and got both of our doses in the second half of last year. The Fry’s pharmacy was able to deliver the shots and it was covered under our insurance.
Providers were having a hard time keeping the vaccine in stock. Our own doctor’s office ran out. Thankfully, the Fry’s pharmacy had enough for an initial dose. (They said they had less than 10 doses left when we got ours.) For the final dose, they called since they were giving preference to those customers who already had their first round of shots.
I got the vaccine and booster and I’m glad I did.
I’m 70 years old and have never had any of the childhood diseases...Measles, mumps, chicken pox...none of them...
The shingles vaccine produced by Merck has been manufactured from aborted fetal cell lines. Only you can decide if that’s a problem for you.
I am not anti-vax, per se. I am pro-freedom. No one should be mandating you to take something internally which may harm your health or violate your conscience. I’m appalled at the FReeper who are advocated mandatory vaccinations out of one side of their mouth then calling themselves constitutional conservatives out of the other side. Nope.
Mom had shingles, so I got the latest vaccine. First shot, arm just a bit more sore than other vaccines. Second shot, developed fever, fatigue by that evening, as if I had the flu. However, just about 24 hours from when I got the shot, all discomfort was gone, and I was fine. No additional problems two months later. Pharmacist said his parents both had the same experience, so plan for that second shot accordingly.

A problem with getting shingles is the rash masks the real problem which is nerves below the skin going haywire. This leads to pain which if let to run its course may last for months or in some cases years.
If you get shingles ,as soon as possible, get to a doctor and get prescription medication to treat it before it gets to well established.
If you let it run its course you could be in pain for a long long time.

Shingles? You betcha. An acquaintance at work came down with shingles. He got better after weeks (months?) of real suffering.
...True, but you do have to worry about chicken pox.
Since 2005, the Chicken Pox vaccine has also been available as part of a combination vaccine called MMRV, which offers protection against measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella.
Shingles may one day be a ting of the past, I've had shingles, it definitely was not a pleasant experience, and still hurts 15 yrs later

Get the Zoster Vaccine (Shingrix - (recombinant zoster vaccine) - shot. And get the booster a couple years later. If you get Shingles, you’ll be very, very sorry about not getting a simple vaccine shot. I’ve seen people w/ Shingles, and it’s painful and ugly. I’ve had mine with no adverse reaction. I had mine.
I just got the Shingrex 2 vaccines. I was cool on the prospect until a friend got shingles all over his abdomen. 3 months of hell.
