Trump's threat to close the border was just a trap for Democrats
The Washington Examiner ^ | April 5, 2019 | Natalie Dowzicky

President Trump had been vocally considering shutting down the southern border until he scaled back slightly on Thursday, giving Mexico one year to decide whether or not they'll comply with his demands. His White House team probably talked him back from the ledge, since it seems he’s the only one in his own administration willing to take such a drastic step.

Indeed, senior staffers and Department of Homeland Security officials view closing ports of entry, what Trump calls a border shutdown, as a method of “last resort.” It’s not often that Trump entirely turns his back on his administration’s 2 cents, but when he does, it’s generally over immigration. This isn’t the first threat of this nature from Trump, and surely it won’t be the last, because, as is evident by his recent backtrack, the president’s not actually serious about shutting down the border. He really just wants the immigration debate to be framed in his favor. He hopes this will all be seen as a dichotomy between his pro-American immigration policy and the Democrats’ anti-American one.

It’s easy to see how empty Trump’s threat was: If he were to actually close the border, there would be dire economic consequences. It’s estimated there’s $1.5 billion worth of commerce occurring along the southern border every day. Meanwhile, from an immigration standpoint, nearly 500,000 people cross the border legally each day, and that’s just through Texas ports. With a border closure, shipments of vegetables and other goods would be halted, truck drivers blocked and stranded, and tourists denied passage of any kind. Trump loves to claim credit for the strong economy, but if he were to close the border, a plunge in stocks would most certainly follow.

Trump is making a mistake with his constant empty threats. Meanwhile another 1.5 illegal aliens are released into the country. At this rate the only thing he has going for his re-election is the nutty democrats running against him.

But as Trump opponents elaborate on their positions in response to his pressure, the president is hoping they fall into his rhetorical trap by labeling themselves as open-border activists or “soft on crime” for their tolerance toward illegal immigration.

Its already quite clear what their positions are.

I think Trump really blew it on the border this time.

Up until now, he has been doing well. But really. CONTROL THE BORDER.

It is like, he has been co-opted by the open borders gang. Which is entirely possible, since they have been selling out our nation for the last generation and a half.

Both parties. Everyone.

Trumps real problem about controlling the border is that the power is really not in his hands despite the clear mandate of the Constitution. He has been handcuffed by his own party, by intransigence on the part of the Democrat party, and by progressive judges who have effectively taken control of immigration policy in America.

A wall will do no good if an adult approaches the border with the child in hand and demands amnesty by reciting a few well rehearsed phrases. At that point both must be admitted and because of overcrowding almost immediately released into the population were they simply disappear. if that ploy does not admit any illegal immigrant, he can gain entry by flying here and simply disappearing into the population or, again if necessary, plead political asylum.

Trump has no control over this. He cannot get the funding to temporarily house these people, he cannot get enough funding for the requisite number of judges, he cannot get a reasonable definition of political refugee as distinguished from economic refugee, he cannot get adequate in country deportation done because of sanctuary cities, and lack of funding for ICE.

In my view, Trump is doing what he can do short of issuing executive orders to cut off the flow of money to Mexico and Central America. That probably will be overruled by the courts but it is one more step which will gain some credibility with the electorate.

He certainly should use the bully pulpit to press for E-Verify funding ( rather than cut that funding) and go to the electorate with that and demand that the Democrats make it mandatory arguing that failing to do so costs citizens their jobs.

The whole point is to show the harm done to citizens by Democrats' intransigence.

Self-important journalists, selfish politicians, and the herd mentality of Republicans thinking with their wallets.

People don't seem to understand: if we don't stop this Invasion now, then very soon we won't have a country.

Put that in your avocado or your stock portfolio.

The rest of the article is garbage. You are not going to embarrass or corner the Democrats, because they are shameless, evil, and psychotic. So are their supporters.

I guess this is the "Trump playbook" from now until the 2020 election?

- Threaten FISA release, but do nothing

- Threaten to close the border, but do nothing

- Threaten to arrest the Deep State, but do nothing

Great strategy. What are we up to know in the dimension of chess? Thirteen?

Illegal entry is not immigration.

You really can’t call yourself a “country” if you can’t prosecute treason and control your own borders.

Makes taxation a real problem over the long haul. As well as maintaining a functional bond market -without which there is no gravy to keep the insanity cycling through.

People who actually live in border states and communities are sounding the Red Alert, but no one will listen. We need 50,000 Marines right now to even stop the ship from sinking. Instead, they get the "old switcheroo."

And they we are supposed to applaud, because.....you know.....Senator Kamala Harris is supposed to be painted in a corner.....or something.

The fake news is (as usual) mis-reporting what Trump said and freepers are falling for it. Trump stands on his threat to close the border, read his tweets.

Don't worry. It seems in just a few short years the United States will be incorporated into the new Global New World Social Justice Order.

No borders. Everyone will get a Universal Basic Income. Housing will be "redistributed." So will everything else.

Trump stands on his threat to close the border

In a year...…..maybe. Then he'll look into tariffs.

"We're going to give them a one-year warning, and if the drugs don't stop or (are) largely stopped, we're going to put tariffs on Mexico and products, in particular, the cars...."I don't think we'll ever have to close the border because the penalty of tariffs on cars coming into the United States from Mexico, at 25%, will be massive," Trump said.

So, we're not supposed to pay attention to these statements, right? They are all part of the 13 Dimensional Chess Game?

Or is it "disinformation"?

Good thing the Tax Bill raised my taxes. The Feds need the money to give away money to all the "Asylum Seekers."

The whole point is to show the harm done to citizens by Democrats' intransigence.

I love reading your posts. You are one of the most insightful people on FR.

Trump supporters, "cisgender white males", and anyone in this nation who is clearly not insane already knows the harm the Democrats, the media, the Globalists, and the Deep State is doing.

Every news article we read just feeds our "Outrage", but very little is done to stop the evil. Outrage Fatigue sets in, and then we start the game all over again.

I'll give you a small example. Buffalo and San Antonio decided to ban Chick-Fil-A restaurants, because the corporation is owned by Christians.

Where are the Feds? Where is Barr? Where is the DOJ?

We both know that during the Obama regime, if a Muslim owned company was denied permits by city officials, those officials would have had their offices raided and they would have been charged with Federal crimes.

We have become so accustomed to our side doing nothing about evil that we expect nothing to be done.

Just to clarify, my statements are not aimed at you personally VT. I know you, and fellow Freepers, are not the cause of this.

Yes, Trump should not threaten to do anything that he’s not ready or not able to do. Not good.

How stupid a statement is that? Wholly. President Trump has the best record of any President in the history of this nation for re-election. What do you think by making stupid statements like that you’re going to make him pander to you? Lol.

His comments are stronger...looks like he will slow down the border at points of entry....monitoring what Mexico does to halt the flow at their border.

Good points-and thanks.

The Democrats, especially under Obama, have weaponized the Department of Justice and the Department of Justice under Atty. Gen. Sessions unilaterally disarmed.
