Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez at SXSW: Americans leave jobless ‘to die‘
Stock Standard ^ | March 25, 2019 | Melanie Poteat, The Washington Times

Posted on 03/26/2019 4:07:14 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

Speaking to a SXSW crowd, ripped into America — again — and said that while the looming robotic culture and automated economy are things to embrace, the flip side is dire because, after all, this country is a society that simply leaves its jobless “to die.”

Hmm. Wonder where all those millions that taxpayers sent to food stamps and housing assistance and basic living aid went through the years.

Anyway, said this, when asked about the looming automation craze that is predicted to supplant human jobs, The Verge : “We should not be haunted by the specter of being automated out of work. We should be excited by that. But the reason we’re not excited by it is because we live in a society where if you don’t have a job, you are left to die. And that is, at its core, our problem.”

What an interesting theory.

But facts hardly support.

“SNAP, formerly known as the Food Stamp Program,” is the nation’s most important anti-hunger program, the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities . “In a typical month in 2017, SNAP helped more than 40 million low-income Americans afford a nutritionally adequate diet.”

SNAP provides food for those at or below 130 percent of the poverty level, which in fiscal 2018, comes in around $26,600 per year for a three-person family.

Then there’s this, as Sapling : “The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development provides housing grants to those who have experienced a job loss or a decrease in income. Programs are available to both homeowners and renters who need help with housing. … Several government agencies have provided funding to help distressed homeowners prevent the foreclosures of their homes. The Making Home Affordable Program helps homeowners who have lost their jobs obtain a forbearance on their mortgage payments.”

Food. Housing.

Then there are the federal programs that with health care and even utilities.

Can you say Medicaid? How about CHIP — the Children’s Health Insurance Program? Or the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, TANF, that actually doles out cash for low-income — read: unemployed — citizens who are trying to get back on their financial feet?

“We should be working [because of automation] the least amount we’ve ever worked, if we were actually paid based on how much wealth we were producing,” said. “But we’re not. We’re paid on how little we’re desperate enough to accept. And then the rest is skimmed off and given to a billionaire.”

And then the out-of-work are “left to die” by an uncaring, greedy capitalistic culture, she accused.

Well, once again, has the socialist sound bites — without the facts.

Fact is, America’s capitalistic society is what allows the government to skim so many dollars by way of taxation, to provide so much by way of housing, food, health care and basic living expenses’ aid to those who’ve lost their jobs, to those who are struggling to make ends meet. If it weren’t for capitalism and the free market, there wouldn’t be so much money in America for the poor.

As the former Prime Minister of England Margaret Thatcher famously said: “The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people’s money.”

The problem with is she speaks of what she does not know.

This idiot doesn’t even speak our language. I barely understand a word she says. I love that she is now tutoring the U. S. SENATE on how to conduct its business. To quote her “”the GOP’s whole game of wasting votes in Congress to target others “on the record” for leg they have no intent to pass is a disgrace. Stop wasting the American peoples’ time and LEARN TO GOVERN. Our jobs aren’t for campaigning....””
What on earth does “for leg” mean? Does anyone know? And not for campaigning? I think that’s ALL they are for! Higher office, cream of the crop lobbying careers etc. Don’t tell me they do it out of their fondness and concern/care for their fellow man!

Did anyone tell her that HER JOB isn’t in the SENATE? It’s in the House but I’ll be darned if I know WHY!!! Does she think Congress never convened until she got to DC? It took 131 years for women to get the right to vote and not a day goes by without me wondering why even then? We have women in office today who are nothing but trouble and I’m speaking as a woman. And let’s not forget the ones who are NO LONGER in office - Hillary, Lynch, Rice, Powers - who still haven’t been brought to justice!

This person is a genius, I tell you. Where has she been all our lives? Are there more like her out there? Good grief - I surely hope not! I don’t know if she’s an only child but I sure hope so.

“”(I know, I know, ended in a preposition.) “”

Bill Buckley said long before he died that it was ok so I took that as permission and I no longer feel guilty about it and neither should you.

... then we'd be living in an economy in which the workers owned the means of production.

But we do live in a economy in which the workers own the means of production.

54% of us own stock.

I know it is not the way people always pictured it and it is not communism but it is what we have.

Of course you point this out to Marxists along with the fact that under communism the workers actually own nothing and their heads start to spin.

We have had decades to prepare for automation. There is probably still time for people to retrain and get away from low skill jobs and low hanging fruit for automation.

Isn’t AOC the one who took credit for destroying all those Amazon jobs? Leaving them to die I see.

When one considers that the liberal idea of taxes is
punitive. Something to be used to control the consumption
of various products or behaviors, IE. Tobacco, gasoline etc.

Then the idea of taxing the wealthy is to create LESS
wealth, and less wealthy people, to the point that everyone
is equally poor. That is except for those in government who
deserve to have power and all the perks that come with it.
It’s amazing how politicians can get elected while of moderate means, yet leave office millionaires while only receiving a government salary.

The automation hysteria is senseless. Running out of jobs for people is a myth.

I believe my newborn cousin is more intelligent than this ‘rising star’. Matter of fact, I’ll give him an IQ test and I bet he is smarter than Maxine Waters, Hank Johnson, Shelia Jackson-Lee and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez combined.
