Getting rid of parasites. This is just the first entry.

There are various kinds of parasites, and some of them are mostly in tropics and/or places with filthy drinking water. In Ayurveda worms, parasites and bacteria or or other microbes are all called “krimi”. And since now western practioners are writing good books there is a lot of detailed info available. And herbs that get rid of parasites or microbes that cause illness are catabolic; ie they get rid of stuff, cleanse the body, and are not for long term use as they can weaken the body and various systems. In other words, just for use until the ickies are gone.

Vidanga
1-15 grams per day (usually a teaspoon is about 3 grams)

Tissues: plasma, blood, muscle, fat

Systems: digestive, circulatory, urinary, respiratory, excretory

Indications: constipation, parasites, flatulence, abdominal distention and pain, yeast infections, candiasis, hemorrhoids, fissure, fistula, diabetes, bronchial asthma, worms, fungal infection.

Vidanga helps to cleans the waste products; hence it effectively rids the body of parasites, especially worms, wherever they may be in the body. It increases agni (fire), and is purifying to the liver, blood, lungs, and urinary track.

As a carminative (anti-gas) and digestive stimulant, it is effectively used in vata (too much air) accompanied by profuse ama (accumulated toxins) in the colon, causing flatulence with an obnoxious odor. Whenever there are stinky, sticky feces, vidanga is the herb of choice to clean house.

From an Ayurvedic perspective, even excess candida, bacterial and fungal infections are all born of ama and fall into the category of krimi (worms or parasites). In such conditions, vidanga gest to the root of the problem by helping to kindle the digestive fire, support liver function, and burn ama from the GI tract, thus helping to treat as well as prevent such conditions. For treatment of paraisital conditions, it combines well with neem and turmeric.

For treating children with worms, doses of 1/4 to 1/2 tsp can be given with a little raw sugar or honey, twice daily to kill and expel worms. A paste of the powdered herb can be effective for ringworm and can be combined with equal parts neem.

When mixed with shardunika (also called gurmar) and turmeric, it helps to control blood sugar and can be used in adult onset diabetes.

Regarding pinworms, eating 3 cloves of raw garlic a day works very well. I got children to eat it by eating with crunch apple slices, ymmv...

Punarnavadi Guggulu

This is a traditional Ayurvedic compound I’ve taken for a long time [along with other heart specific herbs], as it is a cardiac tonic and I had wicked heart issues some years ago that now don’t bother. I ran out about 3 weeks ago and wow....started getting nasty edema and feet, ankles and lower legs. I’m ordering more today, bulk is out of stock but the most reputable brand has tablets. Here are the benefits from my fave herb book. One thing my hub often says when I read herb uses to him is how is it that one herb can do so much? Answer: that’s how herbs are. 😁

This compound is used to dispel excess kapha and water via urinary tract. It is helpful in disorders like obesity, edema, ascites (abdomen holding water), urinary tract ailments, urinary stones, gallstones, fibrocystic changes, high cholesterol, arteriosclerosis, hypertension, and lethargy. It is curative for kapha type arthritis characterized by stiff and swollen joints that are cool to the touch, achy in the morning and better with movement. It is effective for treating jaundice, skin diseases, abcesses, and other inflammatory conditions. It is proven to be beneficial as a cardiac tonic.

Book says 1-4 tablets, 2-3 times daily. Iow, up to you!

$33.29 for 90 tablets.

PS - an herb that is very good for edema, cleansing lymphatic system and other uses is Burdock root. I probably posted about it someplace, will check it out and repost if I did, and if not i’ll do the typing. I’m using it until the Punarnavadi gug. comes in.

Turmeric is getting very popular lately. Some info on its uses and benefits. As usual, I recommend the powder, not extracts, capsules, etc. As a common culinary spice, it is quite cheap by the pound. Always use organic.

Preparation: Infusion (as tea), decotion (simmered), milk decoction, paste.

Dosdage: 1-9 grams a day. A teaspoon is approximately one gram, so one can take a lot of turmeric safely.

Tissues: works on all tissues.

Systems: digestive, circulatory, respiratory, urinary

Properties: stimulant (not an “upper”, stimulates bodily functions), carminitive, vulnerary, antibacterial, antihelmintic, antiviral, antibotic, tonic.

Indications: colds, coughs, sor throat, pharyngitis, asthma, allergies, infections, poor circulation, diabetes, arthritis, anemia, wounds, bruises, skin disorders, weak digestion, indigestion, sprains.

Turmeric is an invaluable medicinal herb in Ayurveda. In enhances metabolic energy and helps to digest proteins, especially legumes. There are very few legume dishes in India where turmeric is not used. It is a natural preservative, thus preventing food from spoiling too quickly when cooked with it.

It is supportive to healthy liver function, thus detoxifying the blood. As a natural antibiotic, it is used to treat all sorts of infections and inflammatory conditions without disturbing the intestinal flora. It helps to cleanse and improve the overall terrain of the GI tract, and its tonic and immune supporting properties make it a good medicine for chronic illness or weakness. The strong anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties are immune enhancing and detoxifying, and turmeric contains powerful free radical scavengers.

A general lung tonic can be made by boiling 1 teaspoon turmeric in one cup milk, can add a pinch or two of black pepper or pippali (long peper) and drinking in morning or evening. I like to add honey to it.

Its antiseptic and astringent properties make it useful for first aid for cut cuts or scrapes. Sprinkle on the open wound, or pack on, and cover with bandaid or something similar. I don’t like bandaids as the glue irritates my skin so I make my own from clean bits of cloth and tape of some kind. Heals up quickly, stings at first. For boils, pimples or other like infections, a poultice can be made from a chunk of steamed onion mashed with 1 t. turmeric, make paste, wrap in gauze or cheesecloth, and apply. I have never done this, but books describe. It can help with skin problems such as eczema if taken in large doses for some weeks.

For sprains or injured joints, equal parts of turmeric and salt with enough hot water to make a paste, and apply to the injured area, wrapping well, to help reduce swelling, pain, and inflammation, as promoted speedy recovery. Ayurveda recommends ice packs only done as first aid within the first 24 hours of injury, and then contrasted with warmth to promote circulation.

For sore throat gargle with 1 t.turmeric, 1/2 teaspoon salt (not kind with chemicals to stop clumping, I only have Himalayan salt in the house), one cup warm water, and gargle.

Regular use of turmeric in the diet helps to inhibit the accumulation of metabolic waste products, can relieve flatulence, and prevent gallstone formation. It has some anti-cancer properties as well.

I would only buy organic turmeric from a reputable seller, such as Starwest Botanicals.

I need to up my intake of turmeric. To be fully absorbed, it’s best to have turmeric along with some fat and black pepper. Odd, yeah? So cooking with it and adding some ghee or butter and a bit of black pepper does the trick.

I think I’ll start making golden milk again. 1 or 1/1/2 cup whole milk, 1/2 t. turmeric, a few pinches of black pepper, bring to simmer. Good with some honey or raw sugar. Think I’ll make some now, for a while I was making daily.

Pinging the list for breathing issues. (freepmail to get on/off this list)

I’ve posted about breathing issues before but rather than trying to find anything on this thread I’m posting again!

It’s the respiratory virus time of year. My lungs feel a bit under the weather and I need to do some of this, I should make Coltsfoot tea tomorrow.

Coltsfoot tea is excellent, the latin name, tussilago, indicates use for the lungs. I buy it by the pound from Starwest Botanicals as that is a reputable company. It is used for coughs, whopping cough, bronchitis, sore throat, asthma, low lung energy, sinus infections, chronic emphysema.

It is an expectorant and lung tonic. it treats a wide variety of respiratory complaints with much success, due to antispasmodic and demulcent (soothing) properties I helps to dilate the bronchials and dispels phlegm, works well in combination with some other herbs such as licorice, mullein, and echinacea.

Coltsfoot strengthens and tonifies the lungs, makes the cough productive, and relieves wheeziness.

When my lungs feel badly congested, I make a strong batch of tea (about 1/2 cup herb added to 2 quarts boiling water, put lid on and steep for at least 15 minutes), then strain, and drink a cup hot, can be sweetened with honey. I save and store in the fridge in a glass jar for next doses. It’s probably about time for me to make some.

Oops- out of stock! Let me find another source, hope they get some soon. It is very light and fluffy so one pound is a big bag.

https://www.starwest-botanicals.com/product/coltsfoot-leaf-c-s-organic/

This is also a very good company, and they have it in stock, and cheaper!

Other things that can help are drinking hot ginger tea, preferably made with fresh ginger root (peel, slice or mince, simmer with lid on for 15 minutes, drink with honey if desire). Other spices that also help with breathing and lungs are cinnamon cloves, and black pepper. Makes a nice spicy tea, tasty with some milk and honey.

Another avenue is using essential oils in a big bowl of very hot water and doing steam inhalations. Good essential oils are eucalyptus, fir, pine, tea tree, camphor, and peppermint. Just a very few drops. I make a blend of these and sprinkle drops on my clothing or pillow if my lungs feel “icky”.

I’ve posted about pippali before, and it is a primo herb for lungs I’ve been taking about a 1/2 t. per day in tea but I think simmering in some milk is more potent.

Steam does help the lungs. My lungs are not doing great right now, I should do it. Or plug in the Prak-ti-kal. Hub got a couple at an auction, humidifiers from the 50’s and 60’s - green glass, a heater thing, and opening for the steam. Essential oils can be put in a little cup on the top. I’ve seen on ebay, let me check.

Aha!

PInging the list for a bit of skin problems info. If anyone has other skin issues they want discussed, ping or freepmail me.

Cracked thumbs or or fingers can be extremely painful and hard to heal. In winter hub always gets cracks in one thumb especially. There are a few things that can help prevent and treat cracked fingers.

1. After getting hands wet or washing them, dry ultra thoroughly, and then apply a good skin oil or, rosewater and glycerine, and then that dries, the skin oil.
Rosewater and glycerine makes the cracks feel better almost instantly, and I make my own. Much cheaper than buying already made. My recipe is not precise (ha!), after looking online it can be 3 to 4 parts (real!) rosewater, and 1 part glycerine (food grade). I make in a bottle (usually a rosewater bottle) shake well before each use. It is also great for apply to the face. It helps with dry skin anywhere on the body.

Best rosewater I’ve found is Cortas brand, and i’ve used rosewater for the skin for years. I usually buy several at a time as it’s cheaper. One bottle for $8.40 isn’t bad.

Cortas - Rose Flower Water, 17 Fl Oz (500ml), Large

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0072NKF4E

I usually buy glycerine from Startwest Botanicals, I’ll look on Amazon. yes, they have it. this brand looks good, there are others as well.

https://www.amazon.com/NOW-Solutions-Vegetable-Versatile-Moisturizing/dp/B0015C0RIC/ref=sxin_16_pa_sp_search_thematic_sspa
NOW Solutions, Vegetable Glycerin, 100% Pure, Versatile Skin Care, Softening and Moisturizing, 4-Ounce

Regarding itchy patches on the skin, here is my story. Years ago I got an itchy patch on the skin, slightly pinkish and got a bit scaly, and itched like CRAZY! I even went to a clinic as I couldn’t stand the itching. Doc gave me some cream, which when I applied, made it itch much more. So I looked at everything in the kitchen that might possibly work and tried vinegar. I lived in Hawaii and had rice vinegar. I applied one or two times, and itch DISAPPEARED, never to return.
Years later I was visiting friends for a while and one of the children had an itchy patch on her leg that wouldn’t go away. I asked Mom for some vinegar, applied with a cotton ball to her itch (once or twice), and it was gone forever.

Doesn’t matter what kind of vinegar, apparently. I know that vinegar kills funguses, so maybe some skin itches are a fungus that bothers skin? I really don’t know...Let me search. Why yes, yes it does!

Skin Oil
I make a blend of coconut oil and almond oil, I can’t remember exact proportions, but more coconut than almond. I usually had some nice smelling good-for-skin essential oils (will look up and post tomorrow what I usually use), and this blend can be used on the face or anywhere on the body. Rubbed in well, it does not leave the skin oily in an icky way.

I make another skin protective oil which also doubles as leather conditioner, which uses beeswax in addition to oils. Hub uses on his hands sometimes as well as belts and shoes.

And anyone handling firewood - USE GLOVES!!! Wood sucks the moisture out of the hands terrible. And wear rubber gloves for washing dishes. If I don’t, my hands are a wreck.
