It took until the end of February but Bryce Harper finally has a team. He has reached an agreement with Philadelphia Phillies. Jon Heyman says the deal is for $330 million. The length of the contract is pretty incredible too: 13 years. There are no opt-outs either.
The match was a long in the making. When the offseason began the Nationals were reported to have made Harper a $300 million offer to return, the White Sox expressed considerable interest and the Phillies openly crowing about their plan to spend stupid money were thought the most likely landing spots for Harper.

Thirteen years is stupid.
Well...he’s young and full of talent.
But he’s gone to a far worse team than the one he’s leaving. Bryce has decided he wants to be the big fish in the little pond.
330 means ticket prices going up again. As the stadiums continue to clear out, one day, the leagues will realize their folly
he will earn an average of $25 million a year.
Goodness.......
This 13 year contract will last until he’s 39 years old.
He’s a fine player, but, it’s anyone’s guess, if he will still be productive into his late 30s.
He is 26 years old—in thirteen years he will be 39.
The odds of a significant injury during that period has to approach 100%.
“Stupid money” is correct.
Didn’t the Phillies see the results of the Pujols and ARod deals? Thirteen years? Really?
We will see, won’t we.
Sports salaries are just stupid. No wonder I can barely afford to take the whole family to a game the way my dad easily could.
If he were a CEO, the libs would be coming unglued at this.
It’s the outrageous contracts that’s making me lose interest in pro sports.
True.
At $25 million per year, if the Phillies attendance is 2.5 million, (just to use round numbers), then $10 out of every ticket sold, is going to pay the salary of just this one player.
It’s actually not a terrible move. You’re paying him less money per year than if you gave him a 10 year deal. And who cares about years 11, 12, and 13? They won’t matter, and all along you will be able to sign more players because the money is spread out over a longer time period.
The Bank will be rocking! Go Phillies!
Boy I hope hes not married.
I know, seeing what happened with Pujols and ARod should have been a warning to the general managers and team owners, that they have a big risk of getting burned on these long term mega million contracts.
Bryce Harper is a good player, and is just hitting his prime. But is he still going to be worth $25 million a year into his mid and late 30s?
Yup.
And the libs will still say that the owners are "colluding".
Some of my fondest childhood memories are of going to ballgames with the family.
Baseball and all the professional sports, have geared themselves to the corporate and well heeled crowd, as opposed to middle class.
If anyone wants to compare ticket prices of yesteryear to today, adjusted to inflation, you would be shocked at how much more expensive tickets to sports events are nowadays, even taking inflation into account.
“Its actually not a terrible move.”
It is a really stupid move.
They said they would spend stupid money and they did.
Harper is a career .211 hitter in the postseason. The more important the game, the worse he performs.
The Nationals should have traded him in the beginning of last year. They could have gotten some value for him.
This will make the Pujols deal seem like a shrewd move.
A lot less than I thought he’d get, after Machado’s signing last week.
