Actually, the ability for this emerging technology to destroy lives and reputations is very much newsworthy and that is what was primarily being discussed.

I did too. I began to fear the smudging of the line between truth and lie, and the manufacture of “reality”, back in the early days of this medium. Nowadays, you can get a lot of people to believe just about anything.
It discussed the technical advances that now allow regular people to select a face from one video, and transplant it onto a body from another video. One application is celebrity porn, but there are a lot of implications for creating incriminating fake video.
It is illustrative of the Left’s propensity for virtue signalling and outright lying.
These things usually go public then die in the media before the majority of Americans learn it was a hoax.
This was a well known person engaging in this, and the hoax has found its way into the media before it could be spiked.
In that sense, it is important.

This article was about the ability to generate porn using the faces of famous actresses. Now, "celebrity fakes" with a real actress' face photoshopped over the body of a nude model have been around for ages but these new live-action films take the authenticity to a new level. They look flawless.
And the technology to make fake pornos with Taylor Swift or Jessica Alba can be used to make fake pornos with Donald Trump, you, or I. Or our kids. Or fake hate crime videos.
That, to me, is newsworthy.
