I saw an interview which must have been made some time ago of Virginia Governor and Senator Harry Byrd. He talked about the time Churchill spent with them as their house guest.

He said that he and his Father who I think was also a Senator, loved him. He said his Mother didn’t like him because he would walk around the house in his underwear.

I enjoyed listening to him because we are related to the Byrds of Virginia and also Robert Byrd of West Virginia. Robert was adopted and took the name Byrd but he was still related to the Byrd’s. Admiral Byrd was also part of the family.

Senator Byrd (Harry) was very conservative

Harry Byrd, Sr. was my boyhood model for all that a U.S. Senator should be. Because he was pretty clearly the most Conservative Senator from the 1930s until he left the Senate in the mid 1960s, i considered myself a Harry Byrd Democrat, until I joined the Republican Party to support Barry Goldwater in 1964.

Here is my review of a biography of Harry Byrd, which I posted on the internet 20 years ago:

Harry Byrd of Virginia.

Harry Sr. was succeeded by his son, Harry Byrd, Jr. who I believe liked my review better--a lot better--than the book reviewed.

On the subject of Churchll? He was certainly a great man, but basically a patriotic "Liberal," as was Joseph Chamberlain in the pre-World War I era.
