It’s unclear whether the runner — who has not yet been identified publicly — strangled or smothered the mountain lion. He had no weapons, so he killed the cat with his bare, bleeding hands after climbing on top of the animal, state wildlife officials said.
“It’s an amazing story. Everyone is baffled and impressed,” said Rebecca Ferrell, spokeswoman for Colorado Parks and Wildlife. “He had no weapons, no knives or trekking poles with him. How did he do it? It’s pretty rare. That is definitely a twist on this, I’m sure.” The victim was running on West Ridge Trail when he heard something behind him, Ferrell said. As he turned, he saw the mountain lion pounce for his head and neck, she said. The mountain lion bit him on the face and wrist. The victim managed to partially block the attack with his forearms, Ferrell said. He managed to fight and break free from the mountain lion. Once he fended the mountain lion off, he counter-attacked the cat by getting on top of it, she said. There are still a few mysteries, though, including exactly how he suffocated the animal. Wildlife officers will go to the hospital Tuesday and ask him many questions about how he survived and then killed the mountain lion, Ferrell said. They found the dead mountain lion within feet of possessions the victim asked the officers to look for, it says. I don’t believe I would care to tangle with someone who can kill a mountain lion bare handed.
Quick thinking, glad he survived. Personally I don't go trail off trail walking unarmed, much less running, aka trail trolling. Sometimes you get a bite. Fortunate it was a juvenile both for smaller size, and the fact that he might not have had time to respond to typical stealthy attack by an adult.
Guess I’m not smart when it comes to animals - knew a couple that raised big cats for zoos and the circus years ago, used to stop by their place and go in the cage with their (approx.) year and a half old lion “cubs” - was a high point of my life.
This reminds me of clean comedian Brian Regan’s routine about the “me monster” dealing with braggarts in social situations who tout their successes and accomplishments. “Checking out my overseas property and driving my Mercedes on the autobahn!” He wondered what would happen if one of the astronauts who had walked on the moon happened to be there and had an opportunity to mention, “Well... I walked on the moon.”
I’m thinking “I killed a mountain lion with my bare hands.” would also work well in that situation.
Maybe some PETA folks would argue that he stalked, then pounced on the Cat and strangled it thus committing murder.

I repeat: Name one time that an animal attacked someone and the person killed it in self defense and was then prosecuted for killing the animal.
I’ll give you one: My brother was going to tear down an old barn and replace it with a new one. Some tree huggers got wind of it and called in the Dept. of Game and Fish. They found two spotted Owls and said he couldn’t tear down their “home’. My brother waited a few days and took his shotgun and got rid of the problem. He called and requested a re-examination because he “saw the owls fly away’. They came back and found no evidence of owls. He built his barn.
Timely post for me. I just read a community bulletin warning of three mountain lions roaming together sighted close by within two miles of my house. This is in suburban Georgetown, Texas.
I know we have coyotes, but really never figured on big cats until now...
That was 2013. What came of it?

I think he died. The poor man was 76 and had cancer. I’m sure the extra stress didn’t help.
