The original UZI is considered a submachine gun. A civilian semi-auto version was made w/ a 16" barrel and classified/sold as a carbine. It was sold with a 10" fake (plugged) barrel for display but one could only fire it with the 16".
The SMG UZI fired from an open bolt with a fixed firing pin, whereas the carbine fired from a closed bolt with a floating firing pin.
