EXCLUSIVE: Turmoil Inside National Review Over Covington Catholic Story, Rich Lowry Losing Control
Big League Politics ^ | 10/20/19 | Peter D'Abrosca

According to a source inside of #NeverTrump stalwart National Review, who spoke to Big League Politics on the condition of anonymity, the magazine is in turmoil after publishing a now-deleted piece bashing the Covington Catholic High School students.

Deputy managing editor Nicholas Frankovich penned a piece called “The Covington Students Might as Well Have Just Spit on the Cross,” which was published at 3 a.m. on Sunday.

“The guy who posted that did it at 3am without running it by anyone,” an employee familiar wit the situation told Big League Politics.

The source said that editor Rich Lowry is “deeply chagrined” by incident.

Trending: Video Evidence Shows Lying Media Falsely Slimed Teenagers for Interaction with Native American Man at March for Life

“Rich feels bad about this,” the source added.

“It appears that most of the teenagers in this video are from a Catholic high school near Covington, Kentucky, across the Ohio River from Cincinnati. They mock a serious, frail-looking older man and gloat in their momentary role as Roman soldiers to his Christ. ‘Bullying’ is a worn-out word and doesn’t convey the full extent of the evil on display here,” the piece, archived here, said.

High-profile members of the magazine immediately took to Twitter to bash the teenaged boys from Covington Catholic after the mainstream press accused them of racist hatred towards Nathan Phillips, a Native American man. After several hours of running with that narrative, Big League Politics, among other independent news outlets, published stories showing the full context of the incident. As it turned out, the Native man approached the boys, beating his drum in the face of the boy at the center of the incident. It is clear that the Native man was the cause of the confrontation.

Since the real story came to light, the magazine has reversed course. It published a Sunday piece telling the actual story, but did not apologize for, or mention its deleted hit piece on the boys.

The heavy hitters at National Review took to Twitter to clarify that, after actually researching the incident, that they were wrong and the Covington Catholic boys were wrongly accused. None of them, though, mentioned the hastily deleted story at issue.

“Deleted my initial tweet on Lincoln Memorial incident. Even the video I watched last night that suggested some ambiguity didn’t fully capture what really happened. This was not what it was portrayed as *at all*” said Lowry.

Let’s step back here. This incident was nothing - worse things happen on every playground on every schoolyard in the world every day. I know it was pushed because of the MAGA hats, but why push it? They knew it would be exposed as a lie pretty quickly, so what was the purpose? Suspect they wanted to start cw2 from this - but still can’t fathom why they want a cw in the first place. If they keep pushing it will eventually come to that, but why does the left want it?

Some think a civil shooting war is imminent
True. I get a laugh out of those who lament how Pres Trump brought coarseneess, divisness, animousity into social and political discourse, as if there's ever been a genuine modicom of decorum to begin with. Trump didn't bring it, he's EXPOSING it, and THANK G-D ALMIGHTY someone's finally doing it. My dad was a local Repub committeman and I saw the fighting, even worse within the Repub and Dem parties than across party lines. Being new to this racket as a member of the Young Republicans I thought Civil War II was going to break out back then with the town of Ramapo, NY being the new Ft. Sumpter.

As a human race, we are better off than ever in history and yet everybody’s a nervous effing wreck.

Heckuva thoughtful post. You’ve nailed the condition of the mental state of America (I mean that as a rough generalization). Look forward to seeing your opinions now and then.

National Review is a publication of the neocons. They, and their magazine, can go right over to the liberals and stay there, as far as I’m concerned. A group of young men have been libeled by this gang which repeated the trash put out by the uniform leftist media without checking it. They should be ashamed of themselves, if a magazine that publishes the likes of French, Williamson and Will is capable of shame.

“...Over the years, I’ve heard (and perpetrated, I confess) some imaginative definitions of the “seamless garment,” or “consistent ethic of life.” It’s a matter of identifying a common principle that can be shown to underlie and unite various causes — the abolition of abortion, of euthanasia, of the death penalty, of you name it — that most people would say are disparate and unrelated. How heightened border security might be of a piece with protecting unborn children is less intuitively obvious than most such hypothetical linkages I’ve encountered...”

This was as far as I could read. Someone called the NRO writing style pompous or pretentious. Pendantic can be added along with muddying the water to appear deep!

”The heavy hitters at National Review...”

"WTF? There are no “Heavy hitters” at National Review. What a bunch of juvenile squat."

Just left off the "S" in front.

I could ‘splain it to him. Needing cheap labor from Mexico is BECAUSE of the young US population lost to abortion. We can’t be bothered having and raising our own kids.

Anyone who doesn’t get that does not belong in any purportedly intellectual pursuit.
