Hypocrite labor unions are exempt from the very same local minimum wage laws that they helped to pass

Labor unions are responsible for passing local minimum wage laws in cities all over the U.S.

But in many of these cities, unions are exempt from the very same minimum wage laws that they helped to pass.

According to this article from the Washington Examiner, hypocrite unions are exempt from the local minimum wage laws in Chicago, Illinois, SeaTac, Washington, and Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, as well as the California cities of Los Angeles, San Francisco, Long Beach, San Jose, Richmond, and Oakland.

Why would unions support the passage of local minimum wage laws while simultaneously getting exemptions for themselves?

Something sinister must be going on. I don’t trust anyone who isn’t willing to live under the same rules that they expect everyone else to live by.

Apparently, the equal protection clause doesn’t apply to liberal hypocrites.

Shame on unions for not living by the same rules that they expect everyone else to follow.

Now what kind of politician would allow that?

Surely not Democrats, the party of the working man.

If non-union businesses go belly up, the unions have better chance of getting contracts....

Unions like minimum wage laws because their base contract rates are predicated on it - raise the minimum and their pay scale goes up. if they are getting $30-40 hr and the minimum is raised to a “living” wage from $10 hr to $15 hr, then the new rate is at least raised by the same $5. They now get $35-45 hr.

Minimum wage laws were established in the first place as a bargaining tool for industrial unions. That was always their base from which to argue for higher wages for their own members, and the negotiations were geared to being some percentage higher than the going minimum.

My personal opinion is that the minimum wage should be $0.00, and the negotiation for a wage should be based on the productivity the employee can bring to the work place. Of course, in practice this is not effective, so the next position would be to pay an apprentice a stipend that covers the costs of basic living, but will not be the wage rate once the apprenticeship has been completed, and the employee may be considered a journeyman.

And it is expected that EVERY employee shall be able to complete the apprenticeship in a reasonable span of time, and thus move up to journeyman level. But that might be “politically incorrect”, so these artificial crutches of a minimum wage, which may or may not be a living wage, are introduced, which may buy a little time for the employer, but do zip for productivity, the engine from which wage increases are paid.

When the minimum wage is set too high, thee is great disincentive for the employer to add new people to the payroll. Otherwise employable people are priced out of the labor market, and remain in the pool of “unskilled” (or wrongly skilled) unemployed individuals.

Exempt from does not mean does not benefit from. Unions typically have escalator clauses in their contracts that increase union wages whenever the minimum wage increases so it's in a union's interest to support hikes in the minimum wage. Of course, they claim they're only interested in helping their working brothers and sisters.

Labor unions were bastions of racial discrimination.

It’s real simple and this has been known for some time.

These laws are structured like this. Employers have the option of paying the new high minimum wage or accepting a union shop. The unions go to the employers and tell them you can accept a union shop and the wage will be significantly less than the prevailing minimum wage.

Unions justify this on the basis that since a union negotiated their wages, then those wages are, by definition, fair. But an individual cannot negotiate so their wage isn’t fair.

Unions have evolved from “worker protection” into giant “protection rackets”, mostly benefiting Union “leaders”.

I have always hated unions...they are “pocket socialism”; everyone stays equal - no matter their job performance. Being in the union and enjoying their “pay raises” is tantamount to “participation trophies”.’

Where I live,it always worked similar to that with a little exception. An employee at most jobs here was hired at minimum or slightly above, but minimum wage here was always pretty low. At a few jobs, you might be able to work your way up fairly quickly, but at most it took a certain length of time as an apprentice. But then came the rub...after a suitable length of time you were to get a raise. Then came the problem. Either you were considered “not quite eligible” for the raise, or you got a raise so small that it amounted to practically nothing. One or 2 places I worked for considered a 2¢ raise completely acceptable. If you stayed there long enough, you might get another 2¢ raise. Or maybe not. Consequently, people were always quitting & employers were always hiring new victims. At the time there were virtually no unions here.

No one who lived through the MLK JR days will forget the garbage strike in Memphis.

Did you know they still don’t make what the City workers make? They make LESS.

Yes, the politicians who supported Davis-Bacon said the purpose was to protect white workers from the competition of lower paid blacks.

Unions’ policy of Being paid based om seniority instead of on merit is a recipe for disaster.
