Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu has expressed his outrage to Israel's Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman after 15 Russian servicemen died when their plane was shot down by Syrian air defenses during a sudden Israeli air attack.
Russia's Defense Ministry says 4 Israeli F-16's used the larger Russian IL-20 plane as a decoy for their attack on the northern Syria city of Latakia.
Russia says it reserves the right to an "adequate response"....

...so they shot down their own plane and are blaming Israel?
Did I get that right?
They are saying the Israelis used the Russian plane to cover their attack on the Syrian target and draw Syrian AA missiles on it instead of their planes.
They’re blaming Israel because they shot down their own plane when they thought they were shooting down an Israeli plane. Hope that clears things up.
Ruskies could not determine that own asset was in the target path?
Maybe the Russians should get the hell out of Syria as they should not have been there in the first place. But, what do I know.
Perhaps Israel should stay out of Syria and stop getting the Russians pissed off at them. It is unlikely to end well. The Russians are known for getting revenge.
The Russians are there at the invitation of the official Syrian government, which is more than the Israelis, Turks, and Americans can say.
So... they shot down their own plane, trying to hit Israeli’s. That’s what I thought.
Presumably their Syrian ally could not properly identify that asset, or at least their weapons couldn’t.
Maybe Russia should have kept their noses our of the area conflict.
Perhaps is the Ruskies and Syrians don’t want Israel messing with them they shouldn’t supply and lob missiles at them.
Bad things can happen.
The way I read this was that Syrian antiaircraft missles downed a Russian plane during an Israeli air attack on Syria. Russia is complaining that Israel should have notified them sooner about the attack so that the Russian plane would not have been in the same airspace. Because Israel did not notify them sooner, Russia is concluding that Israel intentionally did not inform them so that the Syrian air defenses would hit the larger Russian plane rather than the Israel fighters.
The Russians are always known for getting their asses handed to them by the Israelis every time.
Why did the French frigate have to deny launching missiles? It sounds like Israel did something to confuse Syria’s Russian air defense system.
Now now. You’ll hurt his little jihadi feelings.
If they fired on a hostile IDF fighter but then lost control of the missile in flight (improperly set up/commanded) or the system simply has no means of commanding the missile in flight (eg. no "midcourse" guidance from the firing battery) then again, it was a very bad call to make with friendly and/or non-combatant aircraft in range. Again, a failure of Syrian AD and possibly indicative of a shortcoming of the Russian S-200 system.
There is almost no-way Syrian AD comes out of this looking like they did everything right and those mean old Israelis tricked them. Sure, the IDF no-doubt employed technical means and tactics to ensure their safety. It seems to me Syrian AD were (are) poorly trained and/or poorly executed their TTP, probably fired when they should not have, and/or fired in a mode they should not have with an emitting friendly AWACS/ELINT in the area.
It appears the Russian aircraft was struck 22 miles off the Syrian coast.
Perhaps a missile fired at an Israeli aircraft went astray and locked onto the distant Russian aircraft, without the Israelis actively seeking cover nearby. I don’t think the Israelis were attacking from 22 miles away.
The problem with smart weapons is that they really aren’t that smart.
If the Russians are whining that the Israelis did not give them advance notice, the question is, if the Israelis had given them advance notice, would they have shared that information with the Syrians?
If the Russians are in the habit of sharing that sort of information with their Syrian allies, which seems probable, then giving them advance notice is the last thing you would do.
All I’m saying is that it’s a dangerous game. Especially if it results in Putin personally looking bad. He doesn’t seem to be the kind of guy who will take that and not strike back.
Wondering if the Russians wanted that particular plane downed for some reason...
