Given everything we've seen, I'd say the CIA (which was very active in trying to throw the election) is the likely employer. But various Russian intel agencies can't be totally dismissed either.

If you dig down into the story...this professor had some type of work-relationship with the Italian secret police going on. Someone from the US (figured to be CIA) came into the situation and wanted the professor to do work for a small-time project.
I think the guy woke up about half-way through this and realized what kind of idiots he was now connected to, and he walked out. Probably in semi-seclusion right now and trying to figure out who the good/bad guys really are.

I don’t know nor do I suspect any of us civilians know exactly who this guy is. All one can do is to gather info from several sources and make an estimate of the overall meaning.
It seems pretty clear that there was a nontrivial upper-echelon effort to feed Carter Page HRC-dirt information; whether the actual info or that there existed such info. Purpose: To get Page talking about this topic and thus justifying his surveillance and thereby premitting Trump surveillance via “hops”. It now seems like the feeders (Halper, Mifsud, Downer all deny the specific topic matter of “those emails” in terms of any discussion. Yes; each of the feeders may have cast out that line as bait, but the bait was not bit on by Page. He claims he DID notify the FBI that such topic matter was brought up; but he himself never became interested. The issue with Mifsud as I see it is whether he is/was a US or otherwise NATO asset OR a Russian asset. That is a piece of contention. But, if he was a US or allied asset, THEN, for all of the feeders we know about, that shows that the feeders were themselves fed, unanimously. And that would obliterate any and all of the FBI/CIA mythology as to what Page did, making that revelation dangerous. So I think Mifsud is being hidden away somewhere, whether on his own or under order matters little. As far as I am concerned the sole purpose of Page to the FBI/CIA was as a link to Trumpworld via the “hop” methodology. He surely served that purpose in multiple instances, all of them apparently completely unjustified.
