The best action movies tend to be the ones where we get a little substance to go along with the shooting; some battles are realistic some not. This list has some of the most awesome action films of all time.
This list of greatest action movies ever has a mix of one man renegades (Die Hard), extraterrestrial thrills (Alien), and science fiction dreams brought to reality on the big screen (Terminator, Jurassic Park).
You'll even find some great comedic performances among the gun fights, smack talking, and explosions. Heck, you could probably fill a New Jersey size dump with all the stuff that gets blown up in these action films.
The list covers a broad time range as well with nearly as many classic action movies making the list as newer, big budget CGI action-fest.
We added a few that aren't on the list but the gunfight choreographs are good and realistic. For the the serious gunfighter movie-goer understands some movies get their gunfights right and some not so good.
This is a fan ranked list compiled from Reddit and Ranker, not based from IMDB. Here's what we have:
Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark
Die Hard
Terminator 2: Judgement Day
The Matrix
The Terminator
The Dark Knight
Aliens See the rest of this Best Action movies here.

The Sand Pebbles, Flight of the Phoenix (both 1966)

I'm the opposite, generally prefer action to be entirely fantasy. Something like Saving Private Ryan, where every horrible death portrayed most likely played out many times in reality, I fnd depressing. The scene where two surrendering Germans are shot, but they're actually speaking Polish, is horrifically depressing to me -- and it no doubt happened.
I find more enjoyment in fictional events where I don't have to consider the real implications of the action.
Black Hawk Down and Heartbreak Ridge are awesome though.

Outlaw Josey Wales, Fist Full Of Dynamite, Valdez Is Coming. They could have filled a few lists with older westerns starring Eastwood, Lancaster, Coburn and others.

I saw The Sand Pebbles in the theater when it was released. I recall liking it but not really understanding what was going on. Flight of the Phoenix I haven’t seen. I started watching Bullit last night, but stopped it after about a half hour and went to bed.

If you want action but no real substance I suggest COMMANDO CODY AND THE RADAR MEN FROM THE MOON, or THE PERILS OF NOYOKA. It is from these movie serials came the idea for Indiana Jones and so forth.
In good action movies, I still prefer movies like GUNS OF NAVARONE and other such movies. They at least have some plot that holds the movies together.

No kidding. I was talking to a twenty something "kid" about the new Mission Impossible movie, looked worth a viewing. I mentioned that I watched the TV show growing up in the 60s.
His response? Wow, Mission Impossible had a TV series? smdh

I kind of like the classics, such as The Professionals with Lee Marvin, Burt Lancaster, Jack Palance, Woody Strode, and Claudia Cardinale at the height of her saftig sexiness.
