Wow, what a cluster. However before you spend more money on legal bills, Amazon on their website does clearly state that they accept no responsibility for loss or theft of Amazon gift cards:
Gift Cards must be obtained from Amazon or an authorized third party, and you are responsible for safeguarding your Amazon.com Balance or Gift Card from unauthorized use. We are not responsible if any Gift Card is lost, stolen, or destroyed, or if your Amazon.com Balance or any Gift Card is used without your permission.

Would the theft possibly be covered by your automobile insurance policy?

Read the fine print before buying any gift card. Terms differ significantly.
Several years ago, I tried to use a Walgreens gift card online. The order would not go through. Then, I read on their 'terms' that gift cards could not be used for online purchases, but only for in-store purchases. IIRC, their gift cards also expire after a certain period of time, even if they have a balance.
I stick with Walmart gift cards, because they can be used online and they never expire as long as there is a balance. I also learned that Walmart gift card that has the magnetic strip would be used to purchase gas at Walmart stations, but cards without the strip could only be used for store purchases.
