3D printed houses are coming and you could live in one from next year

The housing crisis is a multi-faceted issue, based on problems such as the lack of land space, rising housing costs, and the fact not enough houses are being built.

Yet, there could be a solution to the last one in the form of 3D printed homes.

A city in the Netherlands, Einhoven, will be the first place in the world to have houses made by a 3D printer.

Developed by the Dutch construction company Van Wijnen, in collaboration with Eindhoven University of Technology, Project Milestone as it is called will see five homes built in total.

These will be a mixture of one-storey and multi-storey properties and the company hopes the first residents will move in next year.

Project Milestone: how to 3D print a house

The printer is a huge robotic arm which releases a specially formulated cement, Rudy van Gurp, a manager at Van Wijnen, told the Guardian.

The cement is “printed” according to an architect’s design. Then, the cement is layered to create a wall.

At the moment, the plan is to 3D print the exterior and inner walls of the new homes, off-site. Once a fifth of the homes has been built, Van Wijen hopes to move production to the new housing site.

At this point, the printer could be printing the drainage pipes and other installations for the homes....

The “housing problem” is an over-regulation problem, not a technological problem.

Those are just silly designs. However, once they have it perfected, you probably won’t be able to tell the difference once you have the siding or brick covering on.

Pretty sure that concrete construction here in Cali must include rebar... it has to be able to survive a big earthquake.

They sound like “policy coffins”.

Had one dug up near here years ago mistakenly by a backhoe. Disentegrated. Bones all over the place and nearest of kin had to be notified.

The one on the far right reminds me of the round houses on the Navajo Rez in AZ.

“The housing crisis is a multi-faceted issue, based on problems such as the lack of land space...”

Complete BS. Only 3.5% of the land in the United States is occupied by people.

For various reasons groups block construction from moving outward from a city. This will raise existing home prices and any new construction in the existing city means higher profits and taxes and tree huggers want to block people from living in suburbs as they think we all should live in blocks of apartments governed by the city.
I want a house built of wood.

Those are the houses these guys on Easter Island lived in.

A concrete block has more curb appeal.

Good luck if you want to remodel the thing.
