Had a Marlin 39 lever action and I think it was the best 22LR I ever had. But, believe it or not, my Armalite AR7 will put out a bottle cap at about 75 yards over iron sights.

Tested the same as a Ruger 10-22, in my experience.

Ditto!

I have a Remington pump that I bought in ‘62 6hat still shoots consistently at long range with quality ammo.

I have shot light bulbs at 100yrds with a 22 Remington pump.

I hope you picked up all the glass. Pop cans are better. Some of my favorite spots have been closed because of all the shattered glass a junk people have left.

Which model? The take-down with the wood stock is nice. Just a handy little carbine is good, too. Still kick myself for not buying the Mannlicher stocked model.

I was a kid then and I did. Actually my dad made me pick it up. He didn’t mind as long as I picked up the glass.

Good. And I was making a wider point for others. I pick up other people crap in the forest so they won’t run us out.

It is a 572 Fieldmaster. My dad bought it back in the 1946 or so and I ended up with it. My oldest son has already claimed “DIBS” on it. He has shot it the most and I said he could have it some day.

That is alright, and you are right. When we ALL shoot out there we don't want to leave a mess!

Case in point. There is a gun club close to where I live that friends of mine belong to. It had a Great rifle range were you can shoot out to 200yrds with a rock bluff barrier. Some IDOIT shot over that and the bullet went through a Highway Patrolman's picture window and hit his TV!!

Well guess what the gun club had to close down the rifle range!!

We’ve been to a shooting area in an old gravel pit. First time I went up there I grabbed three extra big garbage bag. My kids thought I was nuts when we got done shooting. I told them we were going to pick up a bunch of crap. I knew it was going to have a bunch of stuff. But it was pretty good - no glass that I saw. Of course there was just some “regular” garbage where folks had tossed their household trash. And yes - primarily I want to keep having a place to go to where you don’t have to follow range rules.

When I pick stuff up now if someone else is there they often ask what I’m doing. I tell them and the reason. “Oh - that’s a good idea!” (duh!)

The local gun range I go to has a bunch of vertical 2” x 12” boards that extend out quite a ways in front of the benches. Quite a few bullet holes in them!

As a teen (16) me and some buddies would go up to the cabin in the winter. We were stupid, and shot bottles set up on the snow-covered lawn at the far end.

Thank goodness we were the first ones up in the spring too - to be able to clean up the mess!

We were always real safe with guns, but it is amazing looking back on how one’s brain really isn’t fully developed and thinking. It was like a complete surprise coming across that glass in the springtime!

Got an old Mossberg 46B bolt, I picked up about 40 years ago.

Got one of those at a farm auction around 1968 or so. Mother said OK on my bidding, IIRC the winning bid was $16. I have shot many bricks through it, replaced the firing pin/safety but the barrel is still pristine. And yes they are tack drivers and prairie dog getters. Mine came with rear ramp and peep sights. Currently scoped for older eyes.

Have a J. C. Higgans Model 36 which I got from my Dad. It was the rifle I learned to shoot with and the most valuable one in my safe. Tube fed 17 shot semi auto.

Took it to a gunsmith once to have it checked out. He told me Sears had several manufactures make their firearms and some of them were junk.

Mine, on the other hand, is a keeper. Gunsmith said don’t ever let it go ... it is as good as they come. Still a tack driver after all these years. Think I’ll take her out to the backyard range this week and show her some love.

She’s not lonely in the safe ... but it is dark in there and she deserves some sunshine now and again.

I grew up on a Nylon 66. Not the most accurate, but surely an adventure to disassemble/reassemble!

I have a Win 52 Target rifle, CMP surplus, just like the one I shot for four years in high school rifle. Even at some 50 years old, wearing its original Redfield sights, with SK ammunition, it shoots clean at 50 m. Best I managed with it has been a 2378 agg ( 4 position). Yes, 50 rounds into less than 1/2 inch at 50m in clam conditions, a bit wider in common weather.

It is very common to see small bore match rifles shoot so small as to be wonders to behold.

It is common practice to order samples from a dozen or more lots and then pick the lot that shoots the best- and buy 5 or 10 thousand ant once time. Eley, SK, etc, not Walmart fodder, we are talking $8-15 per 50 rnds....

Centerfire/High power is more of an endurance race, as the X ring is an even 1 MOA at all ranges (2, 3 and 600 yards), 10 ring 2 MOA, so that is not hard for the rifle to do ( but Wx makes it harder than most admit).

They’re heavy almost as heavy as the target rifle I used in high School back in the 50’s.
My .22 rests in the gun rack of my Polaris Ranger and I still hunt rabbit and kill varmint with mine. That is except when I take a shot from my porch....
