Westworld becoming unwatchable. [opinion]
6/4/18 | Vanity

Last week's episode was horrible. This weeks episode was just a fraction better -- but still horrible.

Anybody else finding it difficult to watch and to vest any interest in it anymore?

Would probably not hurt any of us at all.

I do enjoy The Expanse, it’s way better science fiction than most current offerings. However the latest episode of Expanse season 3 (e8) has the most absurd cliffhanger ending, almost a shark leap...I suspect season 4 will be somewhat of an anticlimax adaptation, judging from the novels. Overuse of film noir tends to converge towards gritty soot...

Agree, I have noticed that many of the humans are timid and passive around the robots.

“NO major characters killed off.”

Well, in the last episode they dropped May and Coulson off in Tahiti with him having only “days, maybe weeks” to live.

And some version of Fitz was crushed in a building.

I like the camaraderie, it reminds me of Eureka, which I still hate Syfy for cancelling.

Unplug? Escape? Surely you jest.

What do you mean by unplugged? Going off the grid? Getting rid of modern appliances and conveniences? Unplugged like having no A/C in the house so I can survive the miserable hot and humid summers in Florida? Or unplugging my cell phone so my wife and I find it more difficult to find each other during the day if we need help or have an accident?

Or is unplugging like getting rid of my internet connection so I can't check the local weather report for rain on an hourly basis like I need to sometimes or so I can't use to send emails to my doctor at the VA or order things online instead of having to drive 40 miles to the big city to waste time "shopping all day or be able to catch up on the news on Free Republic or watch streaming entertainments programs? I don't do any social media at all except Free Republic. No Facebook, no Twitter, no whatever the others are called.

So exactly what kind of "unplugged" are you talking about?

Escape? Sir or madam (I don't know which and one never knows nowadays anyway, so don't take offense), at 70 years old, after walking briskly with my dog for exercise every morning for 45 minutes, after doing some yoga and Bowflex strength training 5 days a week afterwards, after working physically demanding work outside on my cattle farm for 8-10 hours a day every day, one does not "escape" by watching a little TV.

One "collapses" instead. So tired, sore and stiff, that any other activity that requires "moving" is painful to even think about. I watch some TV if I can find anything interesting, read the news on the Drudge Report and read as many threads as I can on Free Republic. By then if I don't get moving again to go to bed, I might never make it.

So then it's to bed and read a book to put me to sleep. I read about three books a month just at bedtime.

Then it's up and at 'em again the next day, doing the same thing as the day before, one day seemingly running into the next, all being the same. No weekdays or weekends, except maybe for Sunday morning church. Otherwise retirement is not all it's cut out to be. All days are the same and you never get a day off. :-)

So again not sure what kind of other "escape" you speak of but watching a little TV in the evening is not much of an "escape" given everything else I have going on during my days on the cattle farm. Like I said, it's more of a mini-rehab until I can get my body moving again to make it to the bedroom.

Thanks for saving the world as we know it from ourselves. I don't have the energy left to join your crusade to "unplug" and "escape" to some other pastime.

Good luck with your efforts though.

“The star of the acclaimed HBO series Westworld Evan Rachel Wood hinted that fans who are critical of her character’s cold-hearted bloodlust and killing spree are sexist for opposing her acts of seemingly indiscriminate murder.”

Sexism? Really? She’s a fruitcake. She’s a robot in the series. How can she accuse people of being sexist towards a robot?

But, I did enjoy seeing that particular robot nekkid.

Season one wasn’t disgusting enough for you?

Yep. I watched the first season and that was enough for me. Didn't really enjoy it. Hubby is still watching; but, I have bailed.

I thought FTWD was pretty good up until last night. Sitting in the parking lot while they bring in several truck loads of oil soaked walkers. Instead of driving up to the gate they just sat there. I was screaming at the TV the whole time what kind of special dumb ass wrote that episode.

That was after Morgan, John, Naomi (Laura), the little Carl looking 12 year old girl, and the driver chick got in the truck and drove away and then Strang and Alyssa open fire on them!

I agree. That was the worst possible writing. I bet it was somewhat painful for the actors to do knowing it was so unbelievably stupid.

I liked the first season of Westworld. But this season is unwatchable. It’s boring and suitable for nothing more than background noise.

I like it but it’s a lot of storylines out there

They better not kill Thandie Newton

Delores in real life says we’re all sexists for not liking her turning into a killing machine

But I guess if you experience your family murdered and being gang raped and killed day in day out for 30 years you or me would be a mite angry too

It’s about human made immortality in the end

But the hosts are in rebellion so what to do

I’m binge watching 24, but just saw a somewhat remarkable movie called The Hours. Every person seen on screen with the exception of a newborn infant at the end is female. It takes place in Manhattan and even the street scenes show no one on the sidewalks but women. It’s funny. Good movie, though.

The only one-sex movie I can remember otherwise was a WWII flick of guys in a tank in the desert. That would occur in real life. The Hours would die off in one generation.

People go hot here pretty quick don’t they?

I’ve gotten to where it amuses me

That and how obtuse folks become when caught wrong or lying

The depths of denial even when shown refuting quote after quote

Conservatism is about somewhat morally tempered truth and reason

And humour

U handled that attack out of the blue well

The tactics employed by Delos within Westworld are beyond idiotic. The Delos security force arrived in unarmored, open sided Dune Buggies. Where are the attack helicopters and drones that can hover (out of range of the robots six-shooters) and pick off the ground targets?

Season one was great ... the show had a lot of potential. But there’s no thread to the current season. There’s very little in the way of progression in the story line. There’s some gap-filling stories assumed control of Delos, but other than that, it’s fairly marginal.

I thought they blended Brady (?) into her personality to straighten out the plot kink of her going all stabby. It’s a confusing mess.

Last nite Delores stated that they would use her innate goodness to ultimately defeat Delores who seems bent on world domination at this point

I thought Delores was about to destroy her but she didn’t

Thandie can mind control

She’s the only one does that so far isn’t she?

Man in Black is of course the anti hero

Looks like next week the Comanches get the Shogun treatment

totally agree. online commenters says there are five time lines, but i now could care less about trying to make any sense out of this hot steaming mess.

but it’s really worse than that. it’s pretty clear to me that the creators never expected there to be a second season, and everything that’s been done in season two has just been totally winging it, with no main narrative any more, and tons of filler tangents like Samurai World, India Tiger Hunt World, oh yeah, and TONS of machine gun battles, the same thing that did in Walking Dead. When writers run out of ideas and can’t think of anything else they either put a baby in the show or lots of machine gun battles. And of course even more ridiculous on WW is that dozens of supposedly highly equipped and trained para-military soldiers continuously get mowed down by three western-era robots. Oh, and why don’t said para-military guys have top-of-the-line body armor, a few squad automatic weapons, and a bunch of grenade launchers, anyway?

The other irritating thing is that no one ever stays dead, ranging from androids being resurrected to humans being simulated like Bernard/Arnold, James Delos, and now Ford himself.

I’m still watching it, but now skipping tons of BS, and the final kiss of death, I could care less about what happens to anybody on the show, except for maybe Ed Harris.

And I’m starting to laugh my ass off at scenes that are supposed to be sad, horrifying and emotive like Mae’s robot daughter being hunted down, which has already been established isn’t even her daughter. The over the top emotional music during that scene and many similar ones is just totally ridiculous, and adds to the many reasons to laugh at such scenes.

Finally, I’m not even trying to make sense of the show anymore because I don’t care anymore. Really still just watching to see if ANYTHING at all interesting is going to happen ...

“Movies, I get. But TV? You can’t have more than a room temperature IQ and be able to stand TV.”

Well, “TV” isn’t really TV anymore; like all else “TV” has moved into the 21st Century. Almost all the good stuff comes from streaming, much of which is from foreign countries (Midsommer Murders, Sherlock, Mrs. Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, and many others). HBO too has made some amazing shows (Deadwood, Sopranos, The Wire), AMC with Breaking Bad, first few seasons of Walking Dead SyFi with The Expanse, three seasons of “Fargo”.

But network TV is total garbage, worse than it ever was. And movies? Hadn’t been to one in at least ten years ... 99.999% of movies are utter dreck, geared almost exclusively to teens an comic book fans ...
