Retailers are facing a shipping squeeze, and the trucking industry just can't keep up.
According to the American Trucking Associations, there's a shortage of roughly 50,000 truck drivers across the country. And it's hitting both businesses and consumers in the wallet.
Companies are complaining about how the driver shortage is impacting their business. Meanwhile, the cost of convenient shipping is starting to catch up with consumers.
Amazon recently hiked its Prime membership to $119 a year from $99 a year. The retail giant said one of the reasons for the price jump was increased shipping costs.
But the driver shortage isn't just because of demand created by online shopping. There's a lot going on behind the scenes, according to Bob Costello, chief economist at American Trucking Associations.
"We have a demographics problem, demand is strong, trucks haul over 70 percent of the freight tonnage, our average age is very high, [and] we don't have enough females," said Costello.....

My 18 year old son just got his CDL. He’s volunteering at a camp for the summer and already has a job lined up when he gets back. No drugs or alcohol so he’s highly desirable. Only problem he has to stay in the state till he’s 21

A trucker friend of mine says the Mexicans aren’t the problem, it’s the Arabs from the Middle Eastern countries.
There's another point here, I think. They're short a lot of bodies, and they have very little participation by one-half the labor force.
If the industry could somehow change that, it would have a profound effect.
Pay people, they will come. All I hear are horror stories.

The median annual Truck Driver - Heavy salary is $42,636, as of April 29, 2018.
At the end of the year, all that matters is that number.

That doesn’t change that I referred to drivers at my company. You sir are an ass. You are no doubt someone who is always right.
Walmart has been dumping their better paid older drivers. They feel the competition pinch from Amazon.
Younger driver replacements are more dangerous.
The DOT health regulation on blood pressure nearly requires a Nazi Olympic athlete. It is to sell pills. DOT Dept of Transportation Safety are pill poppers because blood pressure is an UNRELIABLE measure.
Take it up with salary & employment websites & truck stop drivers. There is the hype salary and the actual real salary.
The high 120% turnover rate says drivers are poorly paid. Facts are stubborn things.

It is a good way to see the country and you can pile up some serious cash.
We have lots of truckers here in NJ, the companies insist they need more, but none are paying nearly that much.
We haul hazardous waste and don’t generally get backhauls. Our drivers don’t have dead time waiting for or chasing loads.
Perfect for a single guy just getting out of the military.
