The mentality of ISIS is that anyone who will not accept Islam should be enslaved or killed. How is our defenestration of Gaddafi anything like ISIS’s mentality? Our rationale was that he had killed hundreds of Americans in the past and was in the midst of slaughtering rebels of various motivations who shared one thing - they were opposed to his rule. So we leveled the playing field by grounding his air force.

Did we send masses of holy warriors into Libya to enslave or kill anyone who will not accept Christianity? No.

The fact is that any turnover of power in the wake of the fall of a dictator will involve a struggle between contending factions for the hot seat. Sometimes, that struggle is peaceful. But a great deal of the time, it is not. Libyans have many issues to work out, and it will be some time before they figure out a balance of interests that everyone can live with. In the interval, they will fight until the losing factions admit defeat.
