Jordan Peterson- "Personal political beliefs are largely determined by temperament & personality"
Youtube/Peterson/Carelton Place Arena ^ | June 2017 | Dr. Jordan Peterson

Posted on 04/16/2018 2:51:17 PM PDT by Voption

"Conservatism has all-too-often found itself unable to articulate a coherent positive doctrine. By this I mean specifically that the laudable conservative tendency to preserve the best of past has too-often manifested itself in a series of "thou shalt not" statements, instead of laying out a manifesto of fundamental values that might serve to unite people around a set of common ambitions. I am attempting to rectify this problem with this statement of principles, some of which I believe might have the additional virtue of being attractive to young people, looking for mature and forthright purpose and responsibility. I am not making the claim that the statement is perfect, comprehensive or final."

Thanks :) I’m very proud of him, as I am all my kids. He’s a unique kid-not your typical teenager. Reads Dostoyevsky and Tolstoy for fun and is also the lead singer in rock band that occasionally gets paid to perform. He just got a fairly significant role in the first play he ever auditioned for at a local community theater. I’ve wanted to see a play there ever since I moved here over twenty years ago but $20/ticket always seemed like too much for amateur theater. Now I have reason to go!

It’s tough to parent someone who is probably more intelligent than I am. Intelligence often comes pride, though, and I pray earnestly for his salvation.

That, is very cool!

I hate to ask... how much does JBP charge?

12 Rules for Life Tour:
20+ New Cities announced
March 30, 2018
https://youtu.be/VoLEe7YEwWw
(2:36)
“appearing with Matt Dillahunty, Sam Harris and Douglas Murray. Dave Rubin of The Rubin Report, is going to open about a dozen of these venues.”
“All this is crazily good, as far as I’m concerned. I’ve had tens of thousands of letters from people over the last year, saying either “watching your lectures has helped me find words to express things I already knew, but didn’t know I knew” or “I was in a dark, nihilistic, addicted, depressed, vengeful place and I’ve been trying to develop a vision for my life and tell the truth (or at least ceased lying) and things are much better.”
“How good is that? And what would happened if hundreds of thousands of people put themselves together? This is what would happen: The future would be better, instead of worse. That seems worth doing, particularly given the alternative.” JBP

You described my oldest son! He is now grown, married with 3 children. I worried about his salvation as well but since becoming a father, things have changed! He often thanks me for giving him a firm foundation and wants the same for his kids. Alleluia ! So hang in there! This too will pass.

I think it was $80/ticket. Three tickets were a splurge for us, but it was important to him. Plus it’s on Father’s Day and soon after our oldest graduates from high school (homeschool). So the three of them will have a wonderful experience thanks to our second son’s (the seventeen year old) persistence.

I can’t wait to hear about it from them!

Respectfully, I’m unclear on your criticism of Peterson.

Personally, I’m trained in (Skinnerian) behavior-analysis with a Cognitive bent, and the Jungian, Piagetian, and Freudian stuff was always way too non-functionally defined for my tastes.
Peterson however, is brilliant in drawing me into the archetypes & meta-reality, and our species-specific stories & neurobiology, are literally as old-as-dirt and embedded into our nervous-system’s in an incredible cybernetic dance.
The “environment” controls you, but you as well, control the environment. (Never be a Victim, ever. Life is Tragedy & Malevolence. Tragedy is utterly random, malevolence is preventable, or at least minimizable.)
“Personality Traits” however, are fairly standard in the psych-biz, in that there are, functionally defined (measurable) Personality Dimensions and associated defining Traits that always cluster, across culture & time, with repeated measurement.
Do those dimensions & traits, seal one’s Fate? I don’t think so.(and they are very fuzzy on the margin’s, but immensely informative in predictive ability across populations.) And while I am largely a Determinist, I’m also incredibly acutely aware of the vast fuzziness of Reality, at the Quantum level.(at which level I hope will eventually lead to our understanding of the physical constructs & substrates of consciousness in humans.)

I’m willing to engage, but I just don’t know what your beef is with Peterson.

When is the last time anyone here, ever heard a clinical psychologist, stand up and rationally explain, in intricate detail, quite a bit of the exact stuff, a lot of us here, all believe and/or know intuitively, deep inside our heads?
That’s like’ Never.
This man is 87.5% my absolute ally, not 12.5% my enemy.

Thanks. (You sound, like a great Mom!)

If your son is into music, have him give a listen to the “12 Rules the Album” It’s linked in one of my comments above.
Computer-music, but very well done. (it has a beat and you could dance to it.)

Concurrently, I’ve grown to adopt more cognitive-based outlooks and am highly intrigued with quantum mechanical processes as potentially being the physical substrate for human consciousness.

I have read some speculation in that regard. Not sure what to make of it.

Peterson’s skill, in my opinion, is to bridge the gap, just enough for my liking, between the physical and the metaphysical, in an extremely “poetic” yet utterly rational manner.

He definitely seems to have a talent for articulating these sort of ideas in a more easily comprehensible fashion.

In the meantime, before I die, my goal is mind my own business, play well with others, be a good person, and try to secure a stable environment for my grand-daughter to grow up in.

Pretty much the same boat for me, though I fear we are losing that fight. I see insanity all around me, and even seemingly reasonable people are sometimes given over to it.

The Greatest-Generation, sacrificed & died, so I could have untold wealth & opportunities showered upon me, in comfort and security, just for practically showing-up

I've been thinking for the past several months that the Millennials could do with a good dose of 1940s hardship and sacrifice. I think hard times makes better people, while softness and comfort make the worst kind.

I’d suggest this to start:

Sir Roger Penrose
“Consciousness and the foundations of physics”
May 2015
https://youtu.be/eJjydSLEVlU
(1:27:50)

“The introduction of quantum mechanics in the early 20th Century led many physicists to question the “Newtonian” type of picture of an objective deterministic physical reality that had been previously regarded as an essential background to a fully scientific picture of the world. Quantum measurement, as described in standard theory however, requires a fundamental indeterminism, and issues such as Bell non-locality cause basic difficulties with a picture of objective reality that is consistent with the principles of relativity. Accordingly, many philosophers of science have felt driven to viewpoints according to which “reality” itself takes on subjective qualities, seemingly dependent upon the experiences of conscious beings.”

“My own position is an essentially opposite one, and I argue that conscious experience itself arises from a particular objective feature of physical law. This, however, must go beyond our current understanding of the laws of quantum processes and their relation to macroscopic phenomena. I argue that this objective feature has to do with implications of Einstein’s general theory of relativity and, moreover, must lie beyond the scope of a fully computational universe.”
Roger Penrose

Re: “Unfortunately, our educational institution’s stopped teaching Burke during the ‘progressive era,’ 100+ years ago.
That being said—”

***********************

The great contribution of Peterson is that using social media he has bypassed the censorship of conservative ideas by the educational system and the MSM.

It is encouraging to see that young people, especially young men, are so receptive to his recommendations to ‘clean up your room’, take on responsibility.
