It’s a fuel tank - they are outboard because of the tail ramp.

It mostly contains fuel, and is also where the landing gear retracts...

Asked my brother, (who was responsible for maintaining this specific S/N craft in Sicily) and he replied:

“It puts extra gas on the fire after they crash. Or in the engine if they do not.”

FWIW, I found the CH-53s to be a MUCH more comfortable (passenger) ride than the CH-47s:

Those "Sponsons" are fuel tanks. That is an MH-53E, the Navy's mine sweeping version of the Marine's CH-53E. It tows a hydrofoil (IIRC) sled that generates strong acoustic & magnetic fields to detonate underwater mines.

The sponsons on the earlier CH-53D carried 317 gallons of fuel each. IIRC, those on the MD-53D were about 500 gallons each.
